I reserved a king non-smoking room through Hilton's Web site for a non-work-related conference last weekend. I didn't sign up for Hilton Honors (since I'm already a member of Starwood Preferred Guest and Intercontinental's Priority Club though only averaging about 17 nights in a hotel each year), so I was wary about the room I would be assigned. I was pleasantly surprised to be given a corner room with a private balcony overlooking Liberty Street.
Initially I was impressed with how spacious the room felt in comparison to similar rooms at Sheraton, Holiday Inn or Crowne Plaza. When room service delivered breakfast the next morning, I realized why -- the Desoto room had less furniture.
It was the first time I had to ask the server to put the tray on the bed until I could clear the hotel directory, promotional materials and my snacks and sodas off the desktop. There also wasn't a table next to the chair to set a glass of soda (or other beverage) while reading the newspaper. And it wasn't possible to watch TV while eating at the desk, should you wish to order room service in order to not miss a favorite program.
Apart from that, the room was nicely appointed and very satisfactory. It was extremely quiet of external noise, and I was impressed with the unobtrusive operation of the internal heating-A/C unit.
The front desk staff was very welcoming. Check-in went smoothly and subsequent encounters were handled efficiently. On the two days I filled out the card for breakfast, room service delivered it exactly at the first minute in the time range I specified. The Desoto's American breakfast is a good deal and quite filling. (An excellent alternative is J. Christopher's, one block east on Liberty, which offers a variety of tasty pancakes along with a selection of burgers and salads for lunch. It's not open for dinner, alas, but the Six Pence Pub and Mellow Mushroom pizzeria are the same distance from the hotel heading west.)
Note to those staying at the hotel for a meeting: all of the conference rooms are accessed from inside the hotel except for the Pulaski Room, which is located across from the lobby entrance. Those who take the elevator from the parking garage to the lobby (as I did) won't have walked past the sign designating the Pulaski Room. I was misdirected (by a staffer who'd made an honest mistake) to the second floor before I was correctly told to go outside the lobby entrance to find the Pulaski Room.
In regard to a previous review that mentioned a slow-draining tub: the tub/shower in my room had a built-in stopper that you flipped to open or close. It wasn't fully in the "open" position the first time I took a shower and yes, water built up inside the tub rather quickly and took awhile to drain after I turned off the shower. The next morning I made sure the stopper was open before I turned on the water and had no problem with water pooling in the tub.
