My fiance and I were really excited about our trip to Savannah and I'm sad to say that we had an AWFUL time, partly in due to the way we were treated at this hotel. Our reservation that we made through Travelocity promised us a free parkview upgrade but we were instead given a room overlooking the garage. When I asked about the possibility of changing rooms for the following day, since I understood they were fully booked that night, I was given nothing but attitude and was basically made to jump through hoops by both Travelocity and the hotel staff. "You see..you're paying this, and you want that" said the staff member in a nasty tone of voice. I actually had to show the staff person the paper that showed we were promised the park view upgrade. Afterwards, she commented that they had had similar problems in the past with Travelocity and Expedia. We were told that the manager would contact us but he/she never did. After reminding the staff several times of our promise of a free upgrade and making no less than three visits to the hotel during the next day to remind them that we needed to switch rooms, we were finally moved to a different room with a park view. (It should be noted that each time we returned we had to explain the situation over even though we were dealing with the same two people.) The room we were given, however, had a very nice view but it smelled like someone had been smoking, which is why I think the balcony door was open when we arrived. (Note: I understand the smell is not the hotel's fault but it sure didn't make us feel any better.) On top of the rotten service we had already received, a bellman knocked on our door one morning at 8am to ask for our bags and it took us about five minutes to try and explain to him that we were not the room that requested a bellman and we weren't even checking out that day. "What?" he asked. "Is this room 201? Someone up here asked me to get their bags." We asked him to try the room next to us but he seemed more than a little confused. Also, the front desk had to keep re-charging our cards each day so that we could enter our room. Needless to say, this got really annoying. One man, who I'm assuming worked there, said we had to recharge our cards if it was after 12pm, which doesn't make sense to me but that is what we had to do. Even though our room was pre-paid for another day, my fiance and I decided to call it quits and actually checked out a day early. When we told them we were checking out early, the front desk seemed not the least bit phased. We knew we had made the right decision when they told us that they the bellman had accidentially tried to give our car to another person because they couldn't figure out who it belonged to. (I'm guessing they forgot to switch our car to our new room number when we switched rooms.) We're not sure if we will ever get the money back for the night we checked out early but it just wasn't worth the frustration to stay there another night. My bit of advice - don't stay here! The staff will spoil your entire visit. They SERIOUSLY need to improve their customer service.

  • Liked — The view from the park view room
  • Disliked — The staff!!!! They are horrible.

Management response from TGIF29, Gen Mgr
(Management representative)
Apr 24, 2007
While the GM DID apologize to the guests, their trip was indeed spoiled. The room was booked through Travelocity and was for a room with "either" a room with 2 twin beds ( which we decided wasn't the best for a couple) OR a room with a Queen bed and yes there was an upgrade BASED ON AVAILABILITY and since this was a weekend naturally we had all our rooms sold. We attempted three times to explain to the guest along with the lady from Travelocity but to no avail. As a way of trying to repair the misunderstand, we were able to upgrade the couple to a premium balcony room overlooking the park and sent up a small apology gift to them. The guest was given exactly what he booked.

The baggage call was an actual mistake on the part of another guest who was at the front desk on his way to the room and asked that the bellman come to room 201 to help him- he was actually in room 501- once again an inconvenience for the guest in 201 BUT understandable.

And yes we did forget to change the room number on his car tag- our mistake. It appears that the circumstances NOT THE STAFF were at fault. The staff did everything they could to help the couple out.

My husband and I along with another couple stayed one night on our way to Florida. We love the hotel and the staff treated us wonderful. Our friends room was much larger than ours, but that was okay. We had asked to be on the same floor so luck of draw we took the smaller room. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The Conceirge pulled some strings and got us reservations at the Lady and Sons Restaurant (Paula Deen's). They also arranged a Carriage Ride that picked us up right at the Inn's entrance. We really enjoyed that!! Also, the reception for the Wine and Cheese was a nice touch. Breakfast served with breads, cereals, pastries, grits, fresh fruit and juice, coffee, and tea. The Inn was nicely appointed with period furnishings. Our rooms had fireplaces. Laptop accessibility. I would recommend this Inn.

Lets see, staff is not trained to take care of anything. The owner is rude and could care less about problems that happen. Oh and look close at a bill and make sure you are not double billed. Pay a little more in some cases and stay at another hotel. Oh to add to all of this the coffie at breakfast was terrible. The price for a tiny room is 135 a night and I am staying at a two bedroom suite in Atlanta across from the Fox next week for 180. Savannah is a great place just stay far away from the Planters Inn. I have been going to Savannah every year for 11years and the only times that I have ever had problems with my hotel is at the Planters. One time they put us in a room that had been painted that morning. This was 2004 during upgrades but we should have been told because by the time we got there there were no rooms left in the area. I would rather stay at a Holiday Inn Express than to stay there again. At least the staff and those in charge would be nicer!!!

Management response from tgif2, General Manager
(Management representative)

Oh yes..Ms. H from Hepzibah,GA. My staff spoke to this lady no less than 6 times on Saturday and Sunday about a billing error on her credit card that was easily fixed. This poor lady however ranted at each of the calls about us crediting her card immediately-which we did-but then called back 4 hours later to say that the credit hadn't appeared. My staff "attempted" to explain to her that the credit would take 3 days to appear since this was a weekend. Ms. H did not believe this and literally berated the front desk staff to the point one girl was in tears.I did speak with Ms. H on Sunday at 3:15pm and attempted to explain the same to her at which point she hung up on me. I called her back to let her know that she needed to speak with her credit card company about this problem at which time she hung up again. she called me back at 5:30pm/6:15pm/6:25pm and 7pm to demand that we now send her a certified check for the refund amount with the 3 days interest added to it.

Ms. H made no of us aware of any problems during her stay and to say the least I don't believe that she had any- except for the coffee -maybe.

We do strive to make our guest as happy as possible- we DO make mistakes BUT we DO correct them.

For sure the best hotel I stayed with my wife during our trip to US.

In my case, we arrived at 8am and the staff let us (at no charge) get the room and go for breakfast. What a good surprise!

The price is good if you make your reservation through the internet (its own website) in their promotional days.

The room is clean, good location, great staff and a good breakfast (not excelent though). Expect to pay for parking ($12 in my case).

The Planters Inn has a great location on Reynolds Square. We were fortunate enough to get a room with a balcony looking out over the treetops of the square. The decor of the room was lovely (we loved the high rice bed) and it was very clean and comfortable. Being right on the square we heard a little noise from below but nothing obnoxious. Our only complaint was with the front desk. They offered to make dinner reservations for us at the Old Pink Hourse next door when we checked in (just before noon) . The young lady said she would call us and let us know whether or not she was successful. We never heard back from her...we went out to walk around the town and upon on return at abour 4:00 we asked again at the front desk (a different desk clerk this time). We were told that no reservation had been made...we weren't clear whether they could not get us in or whether the young lady had simply forgotten. We sensed disinterest on the part of the front desk, to put it mildly.
