“Pleasantly Surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

The Thunderbird Inn is a nice retro property in the historic district of Savannah, GA. Location upside is that it's a short walk across the street to the Savannah Welcome center. This was perfect as we planned on taking a trolley tour of the historic district. You can purchase tickets as well as catch the trolley right at that location. Location downside was that there is no where to eat around the hotel without getting in a car. We actually had to order food for delivery our first night then planned on eating at the Riverfront the next. The rooms were clean and retro designed but could use some updating. This is not a luxury property! I've stayed in another retro hotel with the same feel and it was far better. The moonpies and RC cola was a nice touch each evening. Never made it to the Krispy Kreme /Coffee breakfast each morning. All in all this is a nice retro budget property if you want to spend a night or two touring historic Savannah.

Based on the website and reviews, I wasn't expecting luxury but I was hoping for more than we got. No moon pies or RC colas were delivered to our room, the AC was broken, drunk people in the parking lots late at night, and parking was an issue- there simply isn't enough parking. Location is okay and we enjoyed the Krispy Kremes but won't be staying again. We were excited about the retro experience but it did not deliver as promised.

The entire staff here could not have been more helpful or friendly. They made you feel very welcome and appreciated. The rooms were clean and service great. Even left little gifts each day for you. The price is certainly great. Only negative is that it needs some updating - exterior is very 70's. Saved a lot of money here, though. I'd stay again. Great location - everything we wanted to do was within walking distance.

Neat retro, old-school hotel. Nice and clean, very friendly staff, and low prices! It is a pet friendly place, so you may have to deal with the occasional bark. Short walk to the heart of the town, and to the free shuttles and visitor center. Parking lot does fill up quick, so it’s best to park your car before 10 pm if you want a spot! Donuts and coffee/juice in the lobby are nice. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay. We would recommend staying here, and would stay here again!

We found the Thunderbird a wonderful choice for a weekend stay. As lovely as the Savannah B&Bs are, this was a fun--and much more affordable alternative to them. Great location--easy walk to City Market, the Riverwalk and the Visitor's Center is right behind the hotel making it convenient to go pick out tours, souvenirs and visit two museums. Hotel staff was great. Krispy Kremes start your day with a smile!

Room Tip: second floor gives you great view of the bridge over the Savannah River.

We arrived late (11pm) and were brightly greeted by the night manager ( Mickey?) who welcomed us so pleasantly. Even thought they were close to full he made the extra effort to make sure we parked in a safe spot and then went on to explain how they had Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast.

Once we went to our room (which had gotten upgraded to a king bed!!!) we found a moonpie on the pillow and a cold RC Cola by the bed-stand. The room was clean but had that old style feel to it. I admit I was scared it might have some doggie smells since it is a pet friendly spot but no, it was fine.

We stayed 2 nights and found it to be very convenient walking distance to the hot spots (if you are ok with walking 7-10 blocks. Hey, I was pretty smashed Saturday night and made the walk from city market fine, heh)

Based on other reviews, I think people fail to know what they are coming to. This place is about a retro look and feel, with absolutely fantastic customer service. The daytime manager who greeted me each morning for breakfast was top notch. I needed direction to the bank and boom, a map with drawn x-marks-the-spot.

I will always stay here if I get this level of excellence. My biggest fear is that it become too well known and we won't be able to afford to stay there.
