“Run of the mill Fried Southern food--Onion Rings superb, touch-and-go on the rest”
A-OK if you want chicken fingers, fried seafood, onion rings or Brunswick stew--anything else you order is gonna be chancy! AVOID the BBQ at all costs! When this chain opened up about 30 years ago, they pit-cooked their BBQ and while it was never the best in town, it was tasty and tender. About 15 years in, something awful happened, and what you have today is meat that's apparently microwaved, stringy, chewy, dry and flavorless!--I've tried several of the branches and this is always the same. I can get a good dish of fried oysters or shrimp or scallops there (I like their hushpuppies), mediocre steaks, so-so salads (though they can be good on a summer afternoon) and bland sandwiches--none of it particularly bad, just nothing that great either. Service is generally good, and the bathrooms clean. If you like sweet tea that makes your teeth ache, great--if not, get a coke or lemonade--and though it's not on the menu (cuz a lot of 'church folk' go there--that's what the waitress told me), they do have Beer. Their Brunswick stew is still thick, delicious and a real treat on a cold night-and yes, eat it with the pickles and fresh onion slices they give you! Fried chicken not bad, but the dark meat pieces tend to go bloody at times near the bone, so I stopped ordering them.
Sidenote: This is a favorite family place when you're on a budget. A few times this year we've been and I've discovered that the fried chicken (at the Abercorn store) is very good--kinda oily, but crispy and tasty, and VERY filling! They also have some new things you might want to try like the hot and spicy chicken nuggets. My daughter loves the hamburger steak with onions, the chicken fingers (they're tasty and crunchy good, but sometimes a little small), as well as the hot wings, which are pretty good for the price. There crab stew is creamy and has plenty of crabmeat--don't bother with their deviled crab, though--mostly breading and no real flavor. Their onion rings are the BEST in town, though--I'll give'em that! Big, crispy, golden and divine with a side of honey mustard or ketchup--get these and you won't need much else to eat--filling and can't-eat-just-one delicious!
