My husband and I were planning on going to the Lady and Sons while in Savannah, even though we knew it was a touristy thing to do. However, one of the concierges at our B&B said that the food there just wasn't the same since it had moved into the new building, but that Mrs. Wilkes was amazing. We decided to go there instead. Still touristy, but locals eat there as well.
The trip was so worth it. We waited outside for about 30-45 minutes, but it wasn't bad. The street is tree-lines, so there's lots of shade (we were there in mid-June, and in the shade the heat wasn't so bad), and the houses are so beautiful to look at. We were a bit wary of having to eat with strangers, but honestly, we were all so content with eating that no one spoke much. Our mouths were just too full! It was nice to meet new people, and everyone was extremely congenial and sweet. You really do feel like you're eating at a friend's house, passing the dishes around.
The food is excellent. Absolutely excellent. I'm not usually a fried chicken fan because it's usually so greasy, but let me tell you, I ate more than my fair share here! The sides are wonderful, and the desserts are delicious.
Mrs. Wilkes is a MUST for every trip to Savannah!
