“Good value for your money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

We were there for a weekend before Memorial Day. The hotel had all we need, expected and appreciate: well cleaned, good mattress and linens, silent rooms. We were well treated by the staff and there were a concierge on front desk who was helpful. It's in a very good location, you can walk around the historical center. The hotel had a valet at that weekend. It's not a small and romantic hotel but that's the good thing: you will not be bad surprised in a Double Tree/ Hilton. The only one thing I would complain is about a fire alarm sounding at 3AM... I hate when this happens and can't forget, that's why I rated it 4. Should find a way to sound only at the smoker room.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights; we were in Savannah for a wedding. The hotel is just withing the bounds of the historic district, which was good, although one block in the wrong direction and you are in a bad neighborhood. The hotel is a standard Doubletree, nothing special, unless one considers the four-post beds special (we liked it). We had a room overlooking a busy street so we could hear the traffic sometimes at night. The lobby and reception area were quite nice. Our experience would have been mostly on the positive side if it wasn't for the valet service which was really terrible. The hotel left our luggage with the valet service on the last day of our stay after we checked out; we had a flight at 5:30pm. We had ordered a cab at 4:05pm to take us to the airport. We were promptly at the valet desk at 4pm, gave the valet our name and tip, and opened one bag to put a jacket in. While we were bent over to close the bag, the taxi came and one of the valets meanwhile put another couple in the cab. When we turned around, the cab was leaving with other customers who has not ordered a cab in advance! When we complained, the valet shrug his shoulders and said he didn't hear our names since we were talking to the guy next to him at the desk. They had to call us another cab and it took another 20min for the cab to arrive. We were very frustrated and afraid we will miss our flight.

Dear Doubletree Guests,

We are so sorry about the cab mix-up in Valet. It was a complete misunderstanding that another couple was given your cab and we will discuss this with our Valet staff to ensure this situation does not occur again. We are glad another cab was promptly called and you made your flight on time. Regarding any disappointing service from our Valets, this is very out of character for our staff and this too will be addressed. We want our guests to leave the Doubletree feeling exuberant, not frustrated. We hope you will give us another chance to redeem ourselves as an excellent Hilton property and give you a much better second experience with our staff.

Sincerely,
Danielle Valenchis

Savannah is such a great town. There is so much history, and so much to do there. On our most recent Savannah visit, we stayed for the third time at the Doubletree. It's always a nice place to stay, especially when you compare it to some of the other Savannah hotels, which can be a little iffy for various reasons. The Doubletree rooms are good, although you might want to avoid rooms near the hotel front, which is right on one of the busiest streets in town. The breakfast buffet isnt free, but it has a nice selection. The staff are very helpful, and the hotel concierge is seated right in the front lobby to help you with questions, to offer suggestions, and to provide Savannah tour information. Some of the tours actually pick up and drop off at the hotel. Parking is strictly valet and on site, with a flat daily rate added to your hotel bill. But if you are sticking to tours and/or walking the historic district, you may not need your car much anyway, because the Doubletree is located right in the historic district. The historic Savannah riverfront is just a block away and the City Market area is next door. This hotel is nice, it's reliable, and it's ideally located. Unless you just want to stay at one of the pricey local Bed and Breakfasts, you probably cant do much better than the Doubletree.

We were on our way to Florida and decided to spend the night in Savannah. We were fortunate to get the last room at this Inn. We had a corner room that overlooked a small park and a candy store that had wonderful pralines. Even though our room was small, the king sized bed was extremely comfortable and the view at night was beautiful. The weather was cold and although we didn't have the opportunity to walk around the city, it was a very pleasant stay. We ordered room service and the food arrived hot and the staff was extremely courteous and helpful. We would definitely go there again.

Re: location- The hotel is on the very edge of the historic district. If you walk east, southeast, or northeast you'll find some great shops, restaurants, & phenomenal architecture in restored homes.
However, you might wish to avoid walking half a block & beyond to the west unless you want to see boarded up apartments, litter galore, poorly lit streets, etc
Also, MLK Street is a route for heavy truck traffic & those big guys travel in the middle of the night. So, if you are assigned a room near that street you might get some noise or vibrations.

There is a free B & B about two blocks to the immediate south of the Double Tree. Security at that B&B is 24/7. Room and Board is free. They even provide your clothing. However, it is the local jail so it is easy to check in but tough to check out!!!

Re: amenities- The personnel at the Double Tree are great; especially in the restaurant & bar. However, you will not find certain items like a room fridge for your restaurant leftovers, etc. Also, a there are no morning newspapers at the front desk. They can be found by early birds by the elevator on each floor but disappear by 9:00.

There is a Hilton Garden Inn next door to the east on Bay Street that looked very clean that you might wish to consider. Better yet, you might want to consider going deeper into the Historical District for a hotel or B & B.

Tip: Prior to going to Savannah I checked out the addresses of places on Google Maps. You can get a street view and scroll up and down the street to see what the conditions are for the other buildings. It is no guarantee, of course, that the pictures are up to date but it is a great research tool to make your trip a little more enjoyable.

Savannah is a wonderful way to experience what happens when interested citizens band together to restore older neighborhoods. After our trip we had the desire to head back home and research how our city promotes such projects.

Room Tip: As with all hotels, avoid room near elevators & vending machines so the noise will not interfere...

Dear Doubletree Guest,

We certainly appreciate your comments and we would like to apologize for our location not meeting your needs. We are located adjacent to City Market, Savannah’s second most popular tourist attraction and one block from the world famous River Street. The jail you reference is actually the county’s courthouse but we’re glad you enjoyed taking in Savannah’s beautiful and historic downtown. The city has taken great measures to ensure the beauty and integrity of the historic district and we’re glad you noticed such details. We wish you the best of luck in promoting such projects in your hometown. Thank you again for your review and we hope to have another chance to serve you in the future.

Sincerely,
Danielle Valenchis

My husband and I enjoyed a long weekend in Savannah. The Doubletree's location was fantastic with easy walking access to both the riverfront and downtown hotspots. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The cookies at check-in we're warm and delicious! We were surprised by how wonderful the breakfast buffet turned out. Along with the usual items, you could order waffles and other items from the kitchen, all included with the buffet price.

While our river and bridge views were beautiful we will request a room away from the busy street next time. The road noise from the semi-trucks accelerating at the green light first thing Monday morning was pretty awful. We have stayed at another hotel on the other end of the same main road and encountered the same road noise there. The location of the Doubletree was superior. There are many restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Ladies - leave the spiked heels at home. You will be doing lots of walking with some of the streets made of cobble stone.

Room Tip: To lessen road noise skip the river view!

We spent a long weekend at the Doubletree Savannah recently. As others have said, the location is great, just at the corner of the historic district and walking distance to everything in town. But if you do have a car, parking is valet only at $18 a day plus tips.

The rooms are nice enough, a little bit dated, and in our room the bath was very small and lacked counter or storage space. A tray right outside the bath had the coffee maker and served as a makeshift counter. Power outlets a little hard to locate. Otherwise, our room was fine.

We stayed in a corner room numbered 31 on our floor, at the northwest end of the hall. It was bright by day with all the windows which was nice. However, the housekeeping closet and service elevator sit right outside that room. That meant the housekeeping staff were often in the hallway right outside our room, including Saturday night until 11 PM. I finally had to call the front desk to ask when they were leaving, as we felt our room lacked privacy with humans working right outside the door.

Further dings on housekeeping - twice we had a knock at our door to offer something that we had -not- asked for...extra pillows or a blanket. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding on the particular person's part...one time I think she said a different floor number and was just on the wrong one. What was frustrating is that one of those times, our do-not-disturb sign was up, and they knocked twice anyway. We also were out of the room several hours one day - with one of the housekeepers asking us about whether we were going to be gone as we walked out - and yet came back from our afternoon to find the room had not been made up.

The breakfast was very good, and there was one waitress who was incredibly nice and thorough. Others paled in comparison. The staff generally was friendly, even overlooking the above housekeeping issues.

Hilton lists this Doubletree as a "category 7" for point redemption, which we did in part for our room. Cat 7 is usually a resort or very high end property. This was neither of those. Perhaps it is just the economics of the small number of hotels in Savannah, but overall value for money when we were there wasn't awesome.
