Your first impression of the Westin is that it is a tale of two hotels- the lobby is redone very modern (no longer the plantation style show in traveler photos) but the rooms are still the older decor. Rooms are roomy, the beds are comfy and the river views and views of Savannah are great. The hotel is very much a resort compound which is different than every other hotel in Savannah. The pool area is great and a lot of fun. A building down the road houses the golf club, spa and gym.
As previously reported you do have to take a short ferry over to the historic district. It runs 3 times an hour until 11pm or midnight. It's a quick and easy trip but it does let you off at the waterfront and it could be a bit of a walk to where you want to go. In retrospect I definitely would have rented a car.
There are a lot of families at this location and the hotel is very family friendly- lots of kids in the pool, free family movie on demand at night, popcorn in the lobby. This is either great or not so great depending on what you're looking for. We were celebrating our anniversary and might have preferred a bit more privacy and quiet. Then again our room was right next to the elevator so that's to be expected. We were on the top floor (16th?). Even though this was the executive level, I don't think the rooms were any different and there was no concierge lounge. All in all a nice place for a getaway long weekend.
