“Go if you are a history buff..”

There is really nothing to see once you get inside the fort. It is a self guided tour. An open courtyard and a few doorways with a short movie. The view from the top of the fort is nice of the Savannah River and the big canons are interesting.

I'd like to thank you for visiting the fort. We're glad you enjoyed seeing the cannons and the wonderful views we have. We're moving closer to having an interpreter and programming inside the fort on a daily basis. If you get the chance to visit again, hopefully we'll have more interactive programs in place.

“Good for history buffs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

We ventured out looking for this fort because we had a history/reenactment lover with us. It's definitely off the beaten track, and new, bigger signage would be helpful for people trying to find it, but we got there. Admission was cheap. Disappointed that there were so few staff on site, since we expected to see more artillery demos that we did. Mind you, the girl that did the talk and shot off the cannon was really good, so credit to her. Worst part of the visit was that we literally got 'eaten alive' by huge mosquitos so bring lots of bug spray with you! Oh, and the little gift shop had a surprisingly good selection, especially of books...and the young guy behind the counter was quite nice.

“Fun adventure for the history lover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

My husband and I made a trip to Old Fort Jackson during our stay in Savannah for our honeymoon. There was not as much to see as we expected, but we enjoyed walking through the "archives" at the fort and reading about the relics. Our favorite part of the visit was the cannon demonstration offered by a volunteer at the site. The reenactor explained how the cannon worked, the steps taken to fire it, and how it was used at the fort. Having this expert on site helped us enjoy our trip much more and learn more from our visit.

“Well preserved”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

This is one of the best preserved Forts I have seen. Has a wonderful history that goes with it. All parts of it are available for viewing. A good mosquito repellent might be necessary. The moat around the Fort is a good breeding ground for the mosquitos

“It has a cannon!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

My Girl Scout troop joined the "Girl Scout Militia" and learned what it would take to do a few of the jobs at the fort. For $9.50/girl (patch included) they learned how to turn in formation, salute, flag semaphore and (the coolest part) to load and fire a cannon! (OK, they did the steps to load and fire it but our guide really did it when we were at a safe distance.) At the end of our trip they allowed us to sit in their large covered area and eat lunch. The gift shop is also well-stocked with drinks, bug repellent, rain ponchos as well and some really cool gifts. Don't sit on the walls at the top - ants.
