“History lesson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

As a Christian, I am a supporter and ally of the Jewish people. I was intrigued by the history lesson we received by the lovely lady that gave us a tour. It happened to be Yom Kippur and we were able to catch her before closing for the events. She was very knowledgable and enjoyed speaking with us. What a beatuiful experience!

“Beautiful Temple, a must see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Really enjoyed learning about the temple's history and viewing the photos and artifacts. It's the only temple I've ever seen in the Gothic style.

“A definite must stop for Savannah”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Mickve Israel (“Hope of Israel.”) is the third-oldest temple in the U.S. designed by the nationally known New York architect Henry G. Harrison “ and is in the Neo-Gothic-style of architecture. It's beautiful from the outside, but even more so on the inside. The stained glass windows are one of a kind, and the guided tour the temple provides for a $5 donation is really interesting.
The congregation dates back to General James Edward Oglethorpe time (1733) and the founding of Georgia
Mickve Isreal Temple owns and still uses the oldest Torah Scroll in America, great historical pictures and commentary on early Jewish settlers as well as ten presidential letters on display, including the Washington letter, and others from Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, as well as the more recent ones from George Bush and Bill Clinton
Whether you are Jewish or not this is a worthwhile stop in Savannah.
