“Great local place for seafood and excellent service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

After a recommendation from a friend, headed to Bernie's for happy hour and dinner. Great service! We had raw oysters, shrimp, beer and their famous Bloody Mary. Enjoyed them all and will return before we trek home. Casual place which was busy all night.

“You won't get better oysters any where!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Bernie's Oyster House is the hidden gem of River Street. Their oysters are incredibly fresh, cold, and just a tad salty....just the way oysters ought to be. The bucket of shuck-em-yourself oysters is an incredible deal; between 3.5 and 4 DOZEN "jumbo" size oysters. Doing this will make you appreciate even more Bernie's draft beer on tap. The fried oysters are unlike any you've ever had elsewhere.....not overbreaded and overfried, truly delectable. The steamed shrimp are perfect as well. NOTE: I said "hidden gem" because Bernie's isn't in any of the guide books or handout maps I saw, not in the phone books or yellow pages, and the locals (including hotel staff) "never heard of it".

“Favorite Bloody Mary!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

Went for oysters and a Bloody Mary at Happy Hour. Oysters were OK (warm water)but not as crisp as we had had the night before in Charleston. Bloody Marys are terrific there - actually came back for that as I had been here a few years ago. Friendly bartender and good casual atmosphere.

“If you want oysters, Bernie's is the place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013 via mobile

Decided to try Bernie's steamed oysters. The bucket is $19. They also had a happy hour beer special on domestic drafts for $3.

We were able to open 98% of the oysters (if you eat oysters you know that is a good %).

They cook them just right. Not too much that they become rubbery. They will bring then out with plenty crackers and cocktail sauce. Horseradish available upon request.

We also had a dozen of raw oysters. Good size, but for the money I would stick to te steamed ones.

Clean (remodeled) bathrooms. Friendly service.

“Casual bar w/great steamed oysters on scenic River Street”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Ok, so it's sort of a dive, but not the bad kind: lots of wood, stuffed with people having plenty of beer and laughin' it up, loud TV, cute waitresses in tight t-shirts, but--if you want a good-sized bucket of steamed oysters, or a decent platter of Low Country Boil, this is a good place for best buds to hang out and suck'em up (extra cocktail sauce, please). Wing's are OK, burgers not bad, but really, it's the only place around River Street for steamed oysters since W.G. Shuckers closed down. The oysters are steamed just right and brought to the table with a tin bucket of condiments, good cocktail sauce, crackers and butter if you asked for it and oyster knives--they lil' buggers aren't always steamed open, so pry at the hinge in the back of the oyster (not at the obvious lip up front) and they'll open right up. The salads are uninspired, the fries are good, the beer is cold. It's a party kinda place where the volume goes up as the night goes on. Tables along the wall have high bar chairs, so if you want regular chairs sit nearer to the TV section behind the railing. For dessert, walk on down to River Street Sweets or the ice-cream shop down from there. It's a good lil' place, depending on your mood. If you want historic rooms or elegance, go elsewhere. But for a group of friends content on slurpin' oysters and throwing back some brewskis it'll do just fine.
