“Historic Square with Lots of Charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

I used to work in one of the mansions on this square and had exposure to its charm 5 days per week. First, the sounds on this square are magnificent. You'll hear the church bells from the Cathedral, horses clip-clopping while pulling their buggies, and even the tour guides from trollies telling the stories from the past. This park has plenty of benches including a very large U-shaped concrete bench where Bull St crosses at Perry St.
Chippewa square is also home to the scenes in Forrest Gump where Tom Hanks is sitting on the bench waiting for the bus. The bench itself, however, is no longer located on this square. The Savannah Theatre is located on this square which creates a rich night-life here. The best coffee best independent coffee shop in town, Galllery Espresso, is located on this square at the corner of Bull and Perry St. Stop in for hot and iced coffees as well as tempting baked treats. They have a revolving gallery here as well. The Victorian mansions on this square are exquisite. They are not open for tours, but you can enjoy their beauty from the square and even peek into one of their gardens complete with statuary. Parker's Gourmet Market is just one block off of Chippewa Square. They have a gourmet lunch counter and the best lemonade in town. I think you'll enjoy Chippewa Square just as much as I have.

“The "Forrest Gump" Square!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

As other reviewers have noted, Chippewa is the square most recognized today for its use in Forest Gump as the scene where the bench was placed (although the bench was not original... none of them are placed that way!). Our tour guide mentioned that for the bus to drive the way they needed it to in the film, all traffic had to be reversed from normal, and they couldn't get any of their carriage horses in downtown to go AGAINST the way they always went, to the film people actually had to bring in horses from out of town for use as "carriage horse extras" in the movie - too funny!
Nearby is also the Independent Presbyterian Church whose steeple in the film the feather floats over, as well as -across the street from the IPC- the school district building where Sally Fields, Forrest's mother in the film, met with the school official about Forrest's attendance.

One of Savannah's many squares downtown, around which the historic district was originally built. You can purchase an inexpensive walking guide book (less than $6) that will tell you the basics about the squares and the significant historical people and places that made and make the area what it is today.

“Pretty square in great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

Directly across the street from our B&B, The Foley House (which is excellent too!). Nicely maintained like Savannah's other squares, and in a good spot in town to see while you're doing other sightseeing or shopping. Within a block or two are some nice restaurants and bars, and shopping from homegoods to antiques. Nice place to sit a rest for a bit in good weather.

“One of many nice squares”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

This one is more popular because of the "park bench" scene from "Forrest Gump", but is actually named in honor of American soldiers killed in the Battle of Chippawa during the War of 1812. The bench is not there ( it is on display at the Savannah Visitors Center), but it was located on the north side. Many tourist are not familiar with the location. Luckily, there is always some local who is probably quite amused by our bewilderment and points to the location. There is no sign to mark the spot.

“Forrest Gump was here!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

It was really cool to see the park where Forrest Gump told his story from the bench in Chippewa Square. Although the bench is no longer in the park the area has been roped off so you at least have an idea of where Tom Hanks sat.
