Owner description: Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“Disappointing.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

If it had been less expensive to visit I might have rated this as average. It is small with an underwhelming collection although extensive history of the family. Perhaps the best Savannah has to offer but not really on par with other small museums I have seen with specialized collections.

“Nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2014 via mobile

Having visited many Art museums in towns even smaller than Savannah, I was disappointed with the Telfair Museum. We got the rate that let us visit, Telfair, Jepson and the Owens Thomas house. The collection was very limited and if we had just gone to this museum, it was not worth the admission price.

“Interesting House & Exhibits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014

We enjoyed browsing the exhibits and reading about the architecture of this house. It is nicely curated and very well maintained. We bought the pass that included the Owens-Thomas house and the Jepson Museum--well worth it.

“Not much art you will recognize”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

Because this is a personal collection there is not a lot of art by artist that you will recognize. Also the building has been redone a couple of times and so the architecture is not rally always supportive of the art. Do it as part of the joint ticket for the interesting Owend-Thomas House but don't plan to spend a lot of time.

“Not much to see”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014

The ONLY reason I wanted to go into the Telfair museum was to see the bird lady statue from "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and to see the bench Forrest Gump sat on. Well, the bench wasn't there. It's apparently in the Welcome/Visitor's Center. The statue was there, but you couldn't take pictures of it. While the house was kinda cool and it was fun reading about the history of it, there wasn't much to see. A little waste of money for what there was.
