Owner description: Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“Surprisingly interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We were surprised to see the gigantic very expensive paintings that were hundreds of years old. The statue of the bird girl is also here, BUT they do not allow pictures. I didnt like that.

I expected more....most are replicated works, but still nice all the same. Clean and friendly staff.

“An absolute must see - and buy the package of 3”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Due to poor weather, we tried to fill our days with indoor activities. Thank goodness we did - Telfair Museum was worth the time, particularly if you have teens with you. And, the Owens Thomas House comes in a package deal - again worth the time. Our teens truly enjoyed both. On the contrary, we did not find the Jepson Center to be worth the visit - though the many young children there seemed to be enjoying themselves.

“Just ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013 via mobile

Been to many museums, this one ranks low for me. Boring. Museums are a personal choice I guess. Not much to see

“Nice collection, splendid building!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Plus, a bonus during our visit: a very well curated exhibition of classic to modern chairs!
The building itself is by ace architect, William Jay, and it alone is worth the price of admission: one of the exhibition spaces sports a towering ceiling.
