“Nice authenitc exhibits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

I really enjoy history, and the displays from passed time are so interesting to me for a day on the town. I like seeing the artists of the past in relation to the present.

“If into Model ships this is the place to go”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

This is a model history of ships of Savannah. They have several rooms of different models through time of ships that have visited Savannah or named Savannah. Very detailed models and informative. Also have a little section of ships in bottles and Scrimshaw and a few other artifacts. Don't forget to go down to the basement where they have a mock up of a wheel house that is a great little photo shot.

“If you are a maritime fan you will love it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Enjoyed the history and the workmanship of the ship replicas is unbelievable. The outside gardens are lovely. It is a self-guided tour and you may stay as long as you like. There are three floors with a small "ships in a bottle" exhibit on the lower level--fascinating. The home itself was as beautiful as the art and replicas.

“The best ship models I have ever seen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013 via mobile

The museum is located in one of the oldest, grand houses in Savannah. Unfortunately, it was so altered over the decades that it could not be fully restored to its original residential condition. It has instead been brought back as much as possible to its original design but re-configured inside to three floors of display rooms. The exhibits span the entire history of ocean-going vessels in Savannah, from 1733 through the 1970's. Each of the 7 rooms covers a different era, illustrated by jaw-dropping scale models of great ships of the time. The models range from 3-5 feet in length, with every detail of the rigging, lines, woodwork, and hardware perfect and in some cases cut-away views of the interior decks. There are also paintings and artifacts from the age of sail, whaling, and scrimshaw, as well as short films of the "Savannah" during the WWII landings in Italy and of a "tall ship" weathering a storm at sea sometime in the 1930's or 1940's. To top it off, the museum has the best gift shop we have seen in Savannah, as well as a beautiful courtyard and gardens.
