I wish there was a tour inside the cemetery. Seems like there would be a lot of cool info and history, but it's not presented. All we did was walk around and try to find cool stuff. The plaques were informative, and we got to see Button Gwinnett's monument, but that was about it.

“Very worthwhile stroll”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2012

It'd be difficult to classify my husband & I as history buffs, and yet we'd put the Colonial Park Cemetery high on the list of things to see in Savannah. For one thing, it's free; for another, it's beautiful. But the best part is that these gravestones hold so many stories if you're just willing to take the time to decipher them. See an English, loyalist father buried next to his three Revolutionary War hero sons. Read the heart-breaking tombstones of children taken early from this world. Make out the graffiti of Union Soldiers, boys themselves, who thought it would be funny to change the ages of the deceased. All in all, history is accessible and very much alive in Colonial Park Cemetery!

“Go with a Guide!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2012

Actually the guides are not allowed to take tours into the cemetery, but we had taken the Cobblestone Tours Ghost Tour (the BEST Ghost Tour!!) and so we had heard so many stories, an extensive history, and many interesting historical details about the site that we couldn't wait to go back during the day. Without that info it would not have been anywhere near as amazing!

“Beautiful Old Cemetery!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

This is a beautiful old cemetery in the middle of the Historic District. I wish they would put glass covers over the monuments to protect them. Over the years the writing on the tombs has worn away. It is interesting to read the dates. We felt the trees even looked old and spooky!!!

“Unexpected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

My husband and I spent a long day touring the historic district and ended up at Forsyth Park. On the way back to our hotel, we came across Colonial Park Cemetery. This cemetery is free and open to the public. It is much smaller and less visited than Bonaventure, and was a surprising pleasure to meander through. I thoroughly enjoyed reading many of the headstones, many were worn and hard to make out, but others had beautiful tributes to loved ones that were strikingly poetic. We later found out that many of the individuals buried in Colonial Park, died from the yellow fever outbreak in 1820. I took a photo of a headstone from a revolutionary war veteran who died in 1812. The cemetery had an intimate feel and had many lovely tributes that are worth a visit.
