Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“So peaceful...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2014

I know it may sound a bit morbid, but we LOVE touring Bonaventure Cemetery.. It is such a peaceful and beautiful place. Just strolling through the pathways and reading some of the monuments...Take a side trip from the bustle of Savannah and take a tour..

“Beautiful!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2014

I was blessed to have visited at the perfect time. The azaleas were in full bloom making for a spectacular show of color. The grounds are very very large. There are some beautiful monuments to see including Gracie. I would recommend a tour.. might have made my visit a bit more interesting if I knew the stories behind the grave.

“Unique sculpture and landscape”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

Tour guides tell colourful stories about the sculpture and families. In early April the cemetery was full of flowers. We drove out, and mostly drove inside the cemetery. One way to get more feeling for Savannah culture.

“Not many cemeteries in the world this picturesque”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

I looked hard for the best way to get to Bonaventure without a car, and finally found Tim at Dash tours (dash tours.net). Tim picket me up in the historical town, drove us to Bonaventure and then took us on a walking tour. As a member of the historical society and 3rd generation in Savannah, he imparted fascinating stories of the families that moved ancestors to Bonaventure, the history behind many of the monuments, as well as the grounds itself during a 1.5hr walking tour.
I definitely plan to go back and spend a few hours roaming the entire grounds, but will miss hearing the history behind who the person/ family actually was, what they did and their story.

“Beautiful Azaleas And Live Oaks Dripping with Spanish Moss”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

Springtime in Bonaventure Cemetery is stunning. My wife and I enjoy touring old cemeteries and decided to venture out to Bonaventure during our recent visit to Savannah. The monuments are stunning and the flora is beautiful. You could spend hours here walking the peaceful grounds. Just remember where you park and it's helpful to get a map from the office to help guide you or you could find yourself walking for hours just to get back to where you started.
