Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“Hauntingly Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

I love the whispering winds blowing through the Spanish moss. The statues and carvings are unlike any other historic cemetery I've visited. I could stroll these grounds for hours; reading the loving epitaphs and taking in the sculptures carved by the master sculptor John Walz.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

So beautiful! This cemetery is stunning. We did a self tour by looking up notable grave sites and statues on Google, a guided tour would have been fun.

It is located on a river and has beautiful trees and bushes. Best time to visit is in the spring! No dislikes!

“Beautifully haunting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

I recommend this to people in Savannah. What a great place to pay respects, explore the beautiful tombs and plants. This place is HUGE so take your time and walk around. Don't drive the entire time...go ahead and walk around! There are many graves that are new but mostly older ones, some going way back. A good number of the graves are from the Civil War area (lots of Confederate crosses.) Very pretty place, very haunting though. I would like to return on my next visit to Savannah.

“Beautiful, Surreal, Haunting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

I visited the Bonaventure Cemetery towards to end of my visit to Savannah. What a distinctly unique and haunting experience. The live oak trees stretching their long branches in beautiful configurations, covered with Spanish moss, together with the Civil War era graves, crypts, combine to create an atmosphere that takes you back in time and leaves you with indelible, haunting memories. If you watch the movie "Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil", you will see what I mean. Wonderful visit, but I certainly would not want to be there at night!
