“Delicious, artful, clean, and spacious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

A group of friends went with a person from the neighborhood. She gave us some history and how the original owners are back (thank goodness). We were amazed at the portions and such tasty sandwiches and calzones. Next time for the pizza...

“I LOVE ZELLA's PIZZERIA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

Okay, i have never been to a place with better food or friendlier faces. Every time i walk into Zellas's I am greeted with smiling faces by the employees, and the food there is always over the top good. I have loved and very much enjoyed everything that i have eaten from their, and its where my boyfriend and I took our first date and realized we really loved each other. The food is amazing and the customer service is unforgettable. I wouldnt go anywhere else even if i wanted to, Zella's is just that good. And if you alone when you come in, the waitresses their will take it upon themselves to make sure that you are at your utmost comfortableness, even if it means them sparking a conversation with you about any random topic until your date comes in. 10 stars if it was possible, they just that great. Its great for everything as well, couples, family, friends, business, and solo. Its an all around great place

“The food part of a B&0 trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

First of all, I'm a local, and would point out that only the 2013 ratings apply, since the new management (the old owners came back!) just reopened the place. The 2011 ratings tell you why they had to.
Zella's is both neighborhood fabric and just offbeat enough to be enjoyed by tourists looking to escape the much-ballyhooed tourist-trap food places. It's on the Orange Line of the Charm City Circulator (free bus).
I go with friends, and have also stopped in when shopping at Hollins Market (H.L. Mencken's market mentioned in his memoirs). Tourists at the B&O Museum probably don't know they're just a couple of blocks away -- just follow the Hollins Market signs, circle the market, and you're there. Parking isn't a problem, generally, and the meters are cheap. It's in an old store with tin-stamped ceiling and other charms of the past, and with works from the local artists hanging on the walls.
But the pizza is the reason for going. Their specialties are creative and delicious combinations, and the dough also does not disappoint. They're also touting other menu items. I'm hoplessly stuck in the pizza side of things. Prices are reasonable. They have BYOB until they get their license to sell.

“It's OK for the Neighborhood, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Zellas obviously went through some upheaval when it changed owners around 2011, which took it on a turn for the worst. Now it is under new ownership (I hear they are the old owners, but I don't know for sure). However, as a local place to eat, Zellas always had a low bar to jump. Zellas was always a "good for around here" place. Its pizza is good, but hardly the best in a city that is not really a pizza town. Zellas' appeal was it was close to Pig Town and Hollings Market (transitional neighborhoods) that saved you a trip downtown or east of the harbor to get a decent pizza. The people who worked there were also very likeable and knew how to connect with customers, which made the other negative aspects of the place seem minimal. The other eateries in the neighborhood are generally worst than Zellas, so if you wanted something little better, Zellas fit the bill. The convenience made you forget that the service was always a bit slow (even under the old management), and the menu had good salads and mediocre to bad sandwiches that were often supposed to be hot but served cold in the middle and slow (that hasn't changed with new ownership). Outside of the pizza, the menu is just a step above bar food. So when you go, get the pizza or a salad. So if we're back to the old Zellas, it's still just OK for the neighborhood.
