“Great Location But Too Many Issues”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

Apr 21, 2008

We chose this hotel because of its proximity to Johns Hopkins University. In that regard, the location is excellent -- across the street from the campus.

However, the stay was not excellent. For the premium prices charged, this property should have a high level of customer service and quality settings. There were so many issues that we will thoroughly check out other hotel options for our visit next year.

Issue One: Parking. No where on the website or when you check in are you told that you will have to pay every time you enter and leave the garage. A 1.5 hour stay was $8 alone in the garage. Overnight is an additional $20. Come and go several times and your parking expense can become very prohibitive.

Issue Two: Front Desk. We only encountered one person at the end of our stay who we would consider customer oriented. Others we encountered were indifferent at best and seemed put out to have to talk or help a customer.

Issue Three: No door on the bedroom. The suites are advertised as having a separate bedroom. Yes, there is a bedroom area, with a wide entry to it; no door. The set up was more typical of a low end suite hotel; not a hotel that charges $300 for a suite. So, if you want a private bedroom to allow someone to watch TV and others to sleep, this will not work.

Issue Four: Other room issues. These included a refrigerator that did not work, a TV in the sofabed area that was older and had a fuzzy picture, a sofabed that was too short for a shorter person to sleep on with legs fully extended, a ragged blanket to use with the sofabed, a bathroom with laminate flooring as the ceiling, and a small size for a $300/night room. Yes, the balcony was nice. The room and bathroom were very clean and lots of towels were provided.

Issue Five: Business center. Yes, there were two computers to use. However, the printers did not work and the front desk indicated that we and other guests would have to wait to the end of his shift until someone could figure out the issue. This is the only location for printing out boarding passes.

This is a hotel that seems to think it has a captive audience with its location and has to do little to obtain a full house. Maybe that is true, but how much of that business is repeat customers? A strong attention to certain cost structures (such as the garage pricing policy) and customer service is greatly needed.

“OK not great”

Spent one night at the hotel. Had an issue with a fire alarm at about 10:30pm and was out of room until 11:15pm. Alarm also went of at 8:30 am in the morning for a reset. Needless to say did not get a good night sleep and was disappointed that the staff did not apologize and during the alarm/fire drill one staff member mentioned this was an ongoing problem. Also housekeeping was VERY noisy at 8:00am in the morning. Acted as if they had no consideration for guests trying to sleep. Parking was ok and room was nice. Check-in
very quick.

First impressions is definitely a lasting impression. The lobby is breath taking. During check in there were several other people checking in, there were two front desk clerks at the time of my check in, then from out of the back office two other people came out to help the two clerks. They were very helpful with getting us checked in to our rooms. I believe the fitness center is new it has all new equipment which made my workout very enjoyable. My room was very clean with a huge flat panel tv. The bed was soft my husband thought it was too soft, but I sleep like a baby. Our overall experience was fantastic. I'm visiting Maryland again in July 2008 and I will look to book with the Inn at the Colonnade again.

“Maybe we had a renovated room?”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

Oct 1, 2007

I'm guessing we had a renovated room, because we did not have the problems that I read in the other reviews here. We thought the lobby was very fancy. Our room was small (even though it was called a "large room"), but it was very nice. It had nice comfy beds, and was definitely newly painted. The room itself was very clean. There were no problems that I noticed with the room at all.

The hotel was still undergoing renovations. We saw some areas blocked off with tape, but it didn't bother us (we also had a room right by the elevator, so didn't have to walk down many halls). We did have a problem when we arrived that the electronic keycards were all broken, so you had to have an escort to your room each time. They didn't check our i.d., which made me wonder a bit about security.

The one part of the hotel that was still gross was the garage. The garage looked like a dump. There were dirty old sofas and stained mattresses laying all over the place, and it smelled horribly. We could hardly breathe down there. I don't know why they just had them piled up down there. They also stored the garbage in a sloppy manner right outside some of the rooms by the alley. We didn't have a room with that view, but it sure wouldn't be nice to have the "garbage view".

All in all, it looks like the Inn is improving. The staff were very nice, and hopefully they can finish cleaning this place up.

“Run! Run Fast!”

It took me 9 months to write this review. I stayed at this crappy hotel in January, 2007 because I was taking classes at Hopkins. The lobby belies what the guest rooms truly are. I thought I was at Motel 8 when I first walked into the first room I was assigned to. It was dark, grungy, and the bathroom had a shower stall that needed MAJOR repair and updating. I asked for a change of room because the curtains had a stench of old tobacco smoke, even though it was a non-smoking room. My next room was a tad better, brighter and cleaner, although I had to put up with a toilet with a leaky flush, peeling wallpaper, and dangerous half-hanging electrical wall sockets. I didn't change to another room because I was afraid what I might be assigned to next. I swear, it was like playing russian roulette! The front dest staff could sometime be friendly and helpful, but only if there was a manager in the vacinity. It is shameful that this property is part of the Hilton family. I had submitted a complaint to the Hilton Corporation in 2/07. It is now 9/07 and I am still waiting for a response.
