“Wonderful repeat stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

I have stayed at Phoenix Risin three times in the past 18 months. I find it exactly what a Bed and Breakfast is designed to be. The Inn Keeper is very pleasant, delightful, and always greets me with a smile and a glass of wine. The room was very neat, and clean, with fine linen. I always experienced breakfast as advertised and pleasant accommodations. I always enjoy the quiet neighborhood and will return to Phoenix Risin because of the pleasant experience.

Beware. The Phoenix has not risen, and I suspect it died a long time ago.

This is not a bed and breakfast. This is someone's home, masquerading as a place of business. The experience was akin to sleeping in a random stranger's house for lots of money. Clearly, rooms are rented to subsidize income, but this is not an establishment where the inn keeper genuinely cares about providing services for their victims, er, I mean clients.

Having recently looked at the website for the establishment, I would go so far as to call it bait and switch. The pictures on the website are indeed the Phoenix Risin', but the photos were either staged or were photos from the era when they received the several accolades noted on the website. The establishment has not been maintained in such a manner that those accolades would be given today.

We selected the location to be close to friends who live in the area. Upon check in, we and the inn keeper agreed upon a time for breakfast. That time came and went, and not only was there no breakfast, there was not even evidence that someone was making breakfast. No one who works in the hospitality/service industry would be so negligent as to not provide breakfast at an establishment calling itself a "bed and breakfast." While we could have taken the effort to find the inn keeper, we did not stay for breakfast, because of genuine concerns about the health ramifications involved in consuming a meal there.

The linens appeared clean, but the room seemed like a guest room that hadn't had a guest for several months. The bathroom was scary too. It was dark, and the toiletries were apparently from other hotels and of questionable vintage. The darkness made it difficult to assess for cleanliness. It was apparent that the bathroom was in regular use by an occupant of the home, and was hastily "cleaned" to accommodate a two-legged source of income.

The ambiance...well, it was like staying at a summer cottage that has been closed up all winter and used for storage, but has yet to be prepared for incoming guests.

We have stayed in several bed and breakfasts, where the inn keepers treated us like guests who were dear friends of people they know. The inn keeper of the Phoenix Risin' treated us as if we were a source of income, for which she was required to perform some distasteful service.

The room was not ready when we arrived, and the entire building was uncomfortably warm our entire stay. The 9am breakfast that we agreed to was still not served by 11am, putting a huge dent in our plans to explore downtown Baltimore. I would suggest staying here only if you have ALOT of time to spare waiting, and it's definitely not worth the price.

Altho we are near perfect in service to our guests, there are times when nothing seems to go right. I'm certain that there is not a business or person who has not experienced a day like that. And when guests arrive hours before our normal check-in time, it is very possible that the rooms would not be ready. We have specific check-in times for a reason: to allow us to clean and prepare rooms for the incoming guests. Also, altho we make every attempt to serve breakfast at the requested time, we are not perfect (only 99.98% of our guests are served breakfast when requested). We are certain that this guest did not have to wait as long as stated to be served (altho it apparently seemed like that to him). Regardless, we listen to our guests and in 2012 took steps to ensure that all guests are served on time.

Though we only were there for one night, my boyfriend and I had a lovely stay at Phoenix Risin'. The inn is located in a beautiful neighborhood of Baltimore, convenient to many attractions and historical homes. Janice, the innkeeper, is warm and welcoming, and truly one of the best parts of our visit was having a chance to get to know her over breakfast. Neither of us had stayed at a B&B before, and found it to be far preferable to being at an impersonal hotel--including price-wise!

I see most of the other reviews for this Bed and Breakfast are similar to ours. We enjoyed it very much, and happily recommend it.
Those who didn’t enjoy it don’t seem to “get it.” A Bed and Breakfast is NOT a luxury hotel. They typically don’t have valet parking, room service or bell boys. If you want all of the amenities of a luxury hotel, I suggest you stay in a luxury hotel.
A good Bed and Breakfast is more like a canvas, and the owner is the artist. The idea is to have a charming, clean, peaceful place to stay, and perhaps a unique experience to enhance your travels.
We enjoyed the Phoenix Risin’ very much for just that reason. If you are adventurous, check it out. If you want your stay to be forgettable, stay at the Marriot.

This was the worst B&B we ever stayed at. Our first morning, we requested Breakfast at 8. We came down at 8, there was no sign of the owner or breakfast. We finally knocked on her private door, and she was still asleep. The next morning, she did actually get up on time to cook us a very unimaginative and unappealing breakfast.

When we arrived we were very tired and just wanted to go to our room and get some rest, it took her an hour to get us upstairs and show us around including an extended discussion of the limitations of the dubiously clean bathroom. Even after that, she felt the need to call us on our cell phone in the room to give us more information.

i just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how very much we enjoyed staying at your place over the weekend. it was every bit as lovely as we thought it would be. you should be proud of the establishment youv'e built. when we walked in the door we were awed by the spirit that greeted us.

the location is great. the neighborhood is esthetically pleasing for sure, but clean and quiet as well. i can't say enough about the decor...just breathtaking. i did notice how you pay attention to detail. for instance, i was really wowed by the little adinkra symbols painted on the bedroom doors of the serengeti room. nice touch.

the innsitters were fantastic and knowledgeable about the inn as well as the area and had great recommendations for stuff to do and places to go.they went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and comfortable.

the breakfast was delicious and the presentation was great. i even have special needs that were accommodated (vegetarian).

you left no leaf unturned. we had a memorable time and we would definitely stay again. sherbi and dave
