The Rodeway Inn Mid Town offered my wife and I a very pleasant stay during my businesss trip to Baltimore. We really enoyed the historical significance as well as the friendly way-cool staff.

The Rodeway Inn Midtown boasts a central location amid the serenity of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon district; and while most objective travelers would describe this hotel to be quiet and convenient, there are some, many of whom being frequent visitors to this website, who might also describe this hotel as being quirky – for use of a subjective description.

I will be honest: this hotel has seen better days (it was once known as the Abbey Hotel); at close look, there is a basic appearance of being run down at the edges with tattered wallpaper, splotched carpet and battered yard sale furniture; the TV carries only five channels, the dorm room mini-fridge clearly needs defrosting - unless that was frozen wool I saw in the freezer; the ancient low flush toilet seeks attention through an occasional gurgle and the cramped shower is nothing more than upright fiberglass coffin where you must deftly manipulate the handle to achieve any semblance of moderate temperature. And in the morning, after undergoing the gymnastics required in showering themselves, guests can gather in a small cove off the lobby where they may partake in a complementary breakfast of cereal, toasted white bread, airline coffee and waffles.

Yet despite all this, any open minded traveler may still find this little hotel to be bizarrely endearing in that it does not try to be anything else than what it is: an immodest, yet extraordinarily cheap place to stay in one of the city’s more interesting neighborhoods. First, you are one block over from the historic Charles Street and some interesting attractions, including a few wonderful 18th century churches. You can walk to the nation’s original monument to our first President; a few blocks east will bring you to the Maryland Historical Society, where Baltimore’s own Nipper (the dog depicted on the old RCA record label) is touted. A few blocks down Charles Street is the underrated Walters Art Gallery – with free admission. Additionally, the Rodeway Inn is just around the corner from the Centerstage Theater. True, the hotel is a good distance from the Inner Harbor area; however, the Charm City Circulator, Baltimore’s free bus, passes right by the front door and will get you there as soon as traffic allows. This bus also stops at Penn Station should you arrive by train.

That’s about it for the Rodeway Inn Midtown. Now, if you are the type of traveler who insists on valet parking, room service, internet access and warm towel racks, this is not for you. But, if you are of the type who simply wants a convenient and comfortable room that is very gentle on your budget, then this is the place.

Very friendly staff. Everything was satisfactory. Room was noisy.

The price of the hotel was probably only good thing about this hotel. I had a terrible room, the tv had 3 working channels. The WiFi was terribly slow, and the air conditioning did not work. The service wasn't bad, just the hotel wasn't in the best condition.

If you want modern decor/state of the art amenities, never mind. But the central location, a few blocks from the train station, historic district, good neighborhood, good access to public transportation (free bus stopping just across the street!), at a very reasonable price, makes the Rodeway Inn Mid Town a comfortable and convenient place to stay. The rooms are clean, and the staff very friendly and helpful. Just keep your sense of humor, think Fawlty Towers, and be especially kind to Tony, the maintenance man, and Jamal, the night desk clerk. They are super!

Some suggestions:

Parking: travellers with autos have a problem. No "hotel" parking, either get lucky parking on the street, or pay expensive rates at nearby lots. They should make a deal with one of the nearby lots!

Local knowledge: Where is the nearest ATM machine? The all night shops (7-11)? It would be very handy for travelers staying more than one or two nights to print a map, and hand out copies to guests of useful information about the area. Not the historical stuff, there's already maps for that! For example, within a 10 block radius, the ATM machines, banks, restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, drugstores, etc.

Warning to international travelers: unless you have an account at one of the local banks, there is no place in Baltimore to exchange foreign currency! No, not the train station! Closest place to do this is B.W.I. Airport. Yes, you can take the light rail train, but prepare to spend a few hours on this mission.

If you value honesty, integrity, and your time, avoid this hotel! The local owners of this hotel have no qualms at all about overbooking you well in advance, lying to you about it on the day you arrive, and trying to shuttle you out to their cheaper motel across town. If that sounds like a travel nightmare to you, beware...it could become your reality if you book a room here.

I booked at Rodeway Inn Mid Town about a week prior to my visit to Baltimore by calling the hotel directly. I got a great rate at $99 per room per night. I got a room for myself and another room for my business colleague. I chose this hotel because of decent reviews here and its location close to the train station & where we were conducting a business seminar. I received 2 confirmation numbers over the phone at the time of the booking. The hotel desk clerk refused to email me a receipt, but assured me that I had 2 rooms booked (first warning sign).

The day I was to arrive in Baltimore to check into the Rodeway Mid Town, I checked my reservations online and they were good. However, I received a phone call at about 1:00 PM from the hotel's desk clerk, explaining that there was a problem with the internet in the rooms I had booked. He asked if I would mind staying at the Rodeway Inn on Pulaski Highway, about 6 1/2 miles away, with a free shuttle from the train station and to my business meeting venue. I told him I wanted to stay in the room I booked. I asked him to call the other hotel to confirm whether that would actually be possible, but made it clear that I was not committing to his offer. He said he'd check and call me back.

About 3 or 4 hours passed with no phone call from the hotel. I called them back and again explained that I didn't care about the internet problems and would just rather stay at the Rodeway Mid Town. The clerk changed his story and told me that actually, they were having problems with the toilets in both of the rooms and that it would not be possible for us to stay there. He again offered the rooms at Pulaski Hwy. I told him I'd look into some other options.

I called Rodeway corporate (Choice Hotels customer service) to complain. They confirmed that Rodeway Mid Town had overbooked me, that both Rodeway Inns had the same local owner, and that I was welcome to file a formal complaint. Since returning from my trip, I have come across other similar reviews online for this hotel from customers who experienced the exact same problem (including the bogus stories about plumbing problems). My advice: avoid both Rodeway Inn Mid Town *and* Rodeway Inn Pulaski Hwy. They do not deserve your business!

This hotel is a good place to stay for the location near the Inner Harbor of Baltimore at a reasonable price! My husband and I stayed in a suite that had free wireless internet, refrigerator, coffee maker, and hair dryer. The continental breakfast was delicious and filling. The hotel staff were pleasant, very helpful, and polite. Across the street from the hotel is the Charm City Circulator - free public transportation throughout the city. This is very convenient. Overall, this is a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for the suite.
