We had an octopus in our appetizer on Saturday....and it was terrific! We are by no means timid eaters but we would never order octopus but we were glad we did. The Black Olive is that kind of place. You might come here expecting one kind of experience and wind up with something delightfully different.
The Black Olive is located in Fells Point a charming area full of shops, bars and entertainment that is part of the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore. As an example, after dinner we watched a harborside wedding just feet from the water and then enjoyed a play at a small (less than 100 people) theatre nearby. Not your normal pedestrian Saturday night and the Black Olive was certainly a big part of the experience. The restaurant is bright and airy and we were shown to a nice table by a window in the front of the restaurant. Everything is white and clean and you will feel as if you are in Santorini or someplace just as magical.
Our waitress, Lori, was effervescent and she patiently explained the menu and then took us to the fresh fish kept on ice, They have a fresh assortment of seafood from all over the world and Lori spoke about each one, how it would be prepared and the flavor and texture we could expect from each. WOW! We felt like we were in the kitchen of a two table restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean. Lori recommended we choose the grilled seafood appetizer which included the previously mentioned octopus as well as shrimp, a real Baltimore crabcake and squid stuffed with feta among other delights. We chose a fish called St. Peter which came from the Sea of Gallilee. More entertainment to go with your dinner!
The appetizer was excellent...simply prepared with olive oil, spices and grilled. The octopus was tender and delicious and the calamare was very good. The grilled entre was delivered to our table where it was it was de-boned and served with a fresh Romaine salad. We chose a white wine from the list which was perfect and served attentively throughout our meal. As a plus, the owner came by our table to speak with us about our meal and he spent a few moments talking with us. We always enjoy that kind of personal touch and you can feel pretty confident that you will get great food and service when the big guy is on duty! This is not a restaurant where you will want to go if you are on a budget but it will be one of those that you will remember. Our bill with the wine was about $130 and we will certainly be back to enjoy the Black Olive again.
