“Worth a visit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

As a resident of Baltimore for the past 20 years, I am embarrassed to say I ate at Matsuri for the first time last month. Matsuri is a restaurant that I will definitely frequent again but there are some things to consider when dining here:
1) timing - I would refrain from dining here on a night there is a special event in Baltimore (such as the O's playing or a Ravens home game) as the entire neighborhood is very crowded and parking can be a HUGE challenge and the sports fans can be extremely loud and obnoxious patrons;
2) ambience - the restaurant is modest, on a corner in Federal Hill. There is no harbor view, etc., so if you are looking for that kind of scenery this won't be the place for you.
3) service - good, but the night we dined there our server was extremely overwhelmed. Subsequently, she actually forgot to charge us for certain items so we left her a large tip.

Some of the things to order:
1) the sushi rolls - SO many options and specials that I think there is something for everyone.
2) tempura - very good, very fresh
3) the sake flight was well received :-)

If you are visiting Baltimore and want some sushi then I would definitely check out Matsuri: it is good, affordable and a locally owned gem which can be hard to find in all of the newly developed commercialized Harbor area.

“expectations NOT met”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

My boyfriend and I ordered carryout from Matsuri on a Wednesday night. After spending about sixty dollars on specialty rolls (i.e. Dynamite Roll, Bagel Roll, Rainbow Roll, etc.), I was very excited to eat great sushi. However, this was not the case whatsoever. As soon as we both took a bite into one roll-- it almost caused an instant gag reflex. The fish was NOT fresh and it tasted incredibly fishy (in the old fish kind of way). Not to mention the presentation was awful! The color of the fresh raw fish was completely off--(Should of known not to bite into it....). We also got two house ginger salads-- or shall I say incredibly watery iceburg lettuce with barely any ginger dressing. They forgot our drinks as well. Typically I was happy with this place-- but after this traumatizing situation (yes... I cannot eat sushi for a while), I will not be going back.

“Looks are deceiving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Ate here on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Walked over from bar across the street. Doesn't look like much from outside, inside not much better. But the food! Ate at the tables outside because it was a nice afternoon. Good service, great variety. Sushi and rolls were really fresh and well presented. Nice saki sampler. Reasonable prices. Would definitely go back.

“Great food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012

This was a quaint place with amazing service - the server was quick and very polite. The sushi here was amazing! We also tried a Bento box and it was just as good. The restaurant itself is very small, but it looks like they also have an upstairs for parties, and maybe overflow seating? You can watch the chefs work their magic from all the front tables. The menu is fairly extensive and I loved the a la carte sushi menu. They even had numerous options for 1 piece of sushi (for no more than $2.50) so you can try new things without buying the whole roll. The walls are adorned with their numerous "Best of Baltimore" awards from over the years, so this is a favorite local hangout. Definitely recommended.
