“Decent Afghan Food but Pricey!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

The food is good but not as good as the Afghan restaurants you find in Northern Virginia. It is also more expensive than the ones down the road, but I suppose that is because Northern Virginia has a large Afghan popluation and Baltimore does not. That being said, if you have never experienced Afghan food it is worth a trip. The kabobs are good (they are slightly different than Middle Eastern kabobs) and the other specialties are good. Most of the wait staff are Spanish-speaking rather than Persian-language speaking.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Enjoyed a wonderful meal here one Sunday evening, the ambiance is great, so if the food and service. The appetizer menu is good, the ravioli was great, however, the pumpkin appetizer, Kaddo Borawni (tenderly baked and pan fried baby pumpkin seasoned with sugar and served atop a yogurt garlic sauce) was excellent and was worth the visit by its self. Our entrees were great, my colleague choose the ravioli and I had the beef with spinach and challow (white rice). I decided to have a sparkling wine, which was served to me from an individual small bottle, which was great. The deserts were good and the whole experience was one I would recommend to any one.

“Afgan for all.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

Over the years we have eaten at Helmand many times. Long before the U.S. got involved in the Afgan war. Helmand provided an introduction to the food of the region and we have always been pleased with the experience. Small plates before "Mezi" was popular and kabobs which have always been excellent. This restaurant has provided great food over the years in a pleasant cordial atmosphere.

“Incredible food, especially the baby pumpkin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

My wife and I came here for her birthday dinner a week or so ago, and she definitely saw it as a gift (it was her first time trying it).

As everyone will tell you, the baby pumpkin appetizer is a necessary choice when you visit. The portion is on the small side, so you might want to order one for each of your guests (or perhaps that has something to do with my pumpkin obsession...).

The entree menu is quite extensive and features a lot of distinct options, including several specials each day. My wife had the raviolis, and I had a duck dish. Both were excellent.

The wine list is also extensive, but it seems more cost effective to order a bottle than glasses, as my pour wasn't as high as I would have liked.

Finally, the dessert we ordered was just as scrumptious as everything else. We ordered the pumpkin cheesecake (who would have guessed...).

My only complaint relates to the service. At times we waited several long minutes to receive our next course or even general service (water refills, the check), which seemed to have nothing to do with the crowds (the place was quite empty at 5 p.m. on a Friday). No big deal, but this wasn't the first time I had visited this restaurant and experienced this issue.

One weird element is the layout of the restaurant. If you sit near the windows, you also have the "privilege" of sitting near a food preparation area. If you sit in the initial dining area, you will find it terribly noisy due to the cramped waiting area and the large bar. Your best bet is to sit in the large dining area in the corner opposite the food prep section; you might even have a window seat, if my memory serves me right.
