If you are going to Baltimore, there is only one place to stay - 4 East Madison Inn. From the moment I telephoned and spoke with one of the partners, to the time we checked out, I have never been so cosseted nor comfortable. 4 Madison is located in midtown Baltimore commonly called Mt. Vernon. This area has every conceivable restaurant and shop within a 4-block radius, not to mention 3 lovely parks. If one has to wander further, there are shuttles, buses and taxis galore. But I digress. Sandy and co-owner Betty were there to greet us like family members. The Inn is a huge converted townhome, replete with gorgeous antiques and a staircase that one guest could not stop admiring. (For those who are not stair climbers, there is an elevator.) Each room is breathtakingly furnished, but for the ladies there are no nasty hotel amenities. The products, from soaps to shampoo to hand creams, are top of the line, specialty shop brands. The sheets are Ralph Lauren, and yes, there are soft, thick, heavenly terry bathrobes hanging in the closet. For those who think a B&B means sharing a bath, this is not your typical inn. Each room has its own full bath with enough room to spread out his and her toiletries. If that is not enough, then let's talk service. Sandy and Betty are only concerned with your needs and comfort. They ask what time YOU would like breakfast and what YOU would like. One day I went on a walking tour and when I came back, Sandy was concerned that I hadn't eaten, "made" me sit down, and served me a lovely plate of fresh fruit (I'm talking mangos, a melon to die for, cherries , etc.), cheese and scrumptious bread. For the gourmand, her lunches are divine (I don't know where she found the asparagus, but I haven't seen anything that tender in decades) and 4 Madison East had just begun to serve dinner. One can dine inside or in the garden, which was lovingly restored replete with a koi pond. Their staff is equally charming and kind. There is nothing too small to ask for and voila, you have it. Have I said enough, I hope so, because this is the only place to stay.
