“It's decent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

Just finished my first of two nights at HI-Baltimore. For $30/night, for just two nights, it'll do. My first hosteling experience was HI-Santa Monica, which was amazing in so many ways...so I'm totally spoiled. The building is old and beautiful, but the en-suite bathroom was cramped. The guests were nice for the most part. Really like the common room. Kitchen kind of cramped...but, hey, this is an old building.

So its fine for a weekend or so, but I would plan for something nicer if you're planning on staying more than just a night or two.

the hostel would be quite cool, but sadly I was one of about 5 guests... There is a nice common area with books and a computer. The staff was really funny and friendly. I also took advantage of the hostel hopper minivan with a friendly driver.

I stayed at Hi-Baltimore for a while, and I have to say it is fantastic. The staff is amazing! This was my first time staying at a hostel and I wasn't sure what to expect, especially having to share a room with so many people. During my stay I was in both the female dorm (12 beds) and the co-ed (8 beds). I prefer the female dorm (it's pretty larger, has a great view of the Basilica), but both were nice. The co-ed room was smaller, but there is another larger co-ed room as well. It used to be a mansion, so there's a lot of history (like most buildings in Baltimore). It's not as big as some hotels, but it's comfortable!

The hostel is very clean, cleaner than a lot of expensive hotels I've stayed in! They clean daily, really every few hours it seemed like. Bathrooms were never a mess. I'm pretty sure the beds (which are singles) and pillows are brand new, and if they're not they look it. For $30 a night during the high season and $25 during the low season, it's exceptional. There is a kitchen so you can make your own food during the day and evening, and in the morning they set out all of the ingredients for breakfast so you can make your own (the pre-mix the pancake batter, but they leave the unmixed as well so you can also make it yourself).

Depending on the crowd staying at the time, it has a very comfortable, homey atmosphere. Most of the guests were nice. There are always a few exceptions (some people just don't know common courtesy) but there were never any serious problems. Whenever the hostel was full staff *still* always kept everything in order. And they created an atmosphere that allowed for great conversations and meeting new, fascinating people from all over the world.

The staff at HI-Baltimore was consistently professional and friendly. They're genuinely nice and awesome people. They're also doing renovations, and the current manager had a new WiFi connection installed, plus new cable for the common area flat-screen TV. There is a basement game room, a couple of computers, and also a beautiful patio.

All in all, Hi-Baltimore made me want to try out other hostels as well when I can travel more.I bought a HI Membership, which is relatively cheap and includes a coupon for a free night. I would highly recommend HI-Baltimore for anyone, traveling on a budget or not as long as you don't mind sharing a room (and even if you think you do. I thought I would mind, and it turned out to not be so bad at all). 10+ stars!

Room Tip: If for a couple, the co-ed dorms allow you to stay together.

Location is ok. The 8 bed bedrooms are very small. Breakfast could have more things for the price you pay for the rooms. Staff is very nice and friendly. Checking in should not be allowed after 10 pm - we were all waked up in the dorm by someone very noisy who arrived at 1 am

There are not a lot hostels in the city anyway, so not much choice. The hostel itself is fine, but not as good as the hostelling international in Washington DC or Boston, while the price is the same. The building is quite old (which is fine), and everything (bed, toilet, hallway) is quite narrow. The location is fine (you are not possible to be close to everything), able to walk to most of the tourists places, and the free circulator bus is very close. The big church is close by, and the bell will wake you up in the morning.

The hostel has a good location with easy access to public transportation for the airport and around the city and if you like walking you can get to most places by foot. The staff work successfully to keep this old building clean and polished. There are a few creaking doors but also a degree of charm you won't find in modern places. Would certainly stay here again.

This hostel is in an old mansion that is being upgraded and refurbished. It just had sprinklers put in, and it's working to expand up into more rooms. The staff are friendly and love the hostel. They no where to go, and they have some discounts worked out with local places for guests.
