Owner description: The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Founded in 1914 with a single painting, the BMA today has 90,000 works of art-including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.* The museum is currently undergoing an unprecedented $28 million renovation to provide visitors with a more welcoming environment and more imaginative and inspiring encounters with art. The BMA is remaining open throughout the multi-year project so that visitors can enjoy its outstanding selection of European and American painting and sculpture from the 17th through 20th centuries and the newly reinstalled Contemporary Wing with 14 galleries showcasing the art of our time. Two beautifully landscaped gardens display an array of 20th-century sculpture that is an oasis in the city. The museum's 100th anniversary will be celebrated in November 2014 with the reopening of the grand historic entrance designed by John Russell Pope and a beautiful new presentation of the museum's distinguished collection of American art. Subsequent reopenings include expanded galleries for the African and Asian art collections and a new learning and creativity center that will open in 2015. Since 2006, the BMA has eliminated general admission fees so that everyone can enjoy the power of art. * Many of the BMA's works by Matisse are part of a special exhibition traveling to museums in Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and San Antonio in 2013 and 2014. If you are visiting to see a specific artwork, please call the BMA Box Office to make sure it will be on view.

“Interesting Art Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2012

The museum has a wide variety of art and the exhibits seem to change often. I need to get back and check out the sculpture garden. A part of this museum I greatly enjoyed was a hall of mosaic tile floors dating from Roman times.

The staff is super friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be going back. Too much to see in the 3 hours that I was there!

“Great place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2012

For a city the size of Baltimore, this is a great museum with some awesome exhibits. AND, it's free!! Also, Gertrude's, the restaurant inside the BMA (open even when the BMA is closed) is wonderful too.

This is a fine museum with a rich collection displayed in an interesting and information manner. A Sunday visit never fails to entertain.

“A great museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

The BMA is like a big treasure trove of interesting objects, and wonderful paintings. The Core Collection in particular is astonishing and contains works beyond those normally found in provincial museums. Its well worth a visit if you are in Baltimore. There is also an interesting gift shop and good (if a tad pricy) restaurant. If you are there in good weather, spend some time in the sculpture garden, which is lovely.

“Not the MET but pretty good for the area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

BMA has a neat collection with works from Raphael and Rembrant. I very much like their African and Native American collections (collectively comprises over 3,000 pieces). Its a family friendly musuem with fun filled events. The nicest feature, however, is the dining hall. Its a wonderful place for brunch or a quick business lunch.
