“No flaw to find, fabulous place.”

Astoria Inn

Jul 7, 2008

Micky and Blossom the Exceedlingly Gentle Bulldog have a beautiful home high on the hill overlooking the river and it was a privilege to stay with them for a night. I wished it had been longer.

I had a small accident on the way and so was late for check in (4 til 7) and was so relieved to find my room was still available! Never have I been so glad to see a plate of cookies and a comfortable chair or two in my life. I spent the evening with my injured legs up watching the sun set over the river, wonderful. I was in the Cape Lookout room, full of lovely red tones and cherubs. All the rooms have different looks and all that I saw were beautiful.

The shower was great and had a seat in it, which in my wounded state, I found incredibly useful.

The house is full of interesting knick knacks and novelties, there's certainly plenty to look at. No wi-fi but the chance to sit and look at the view and read was welcome.

Breakfast was at 9am with the other guests and was entirely pleasant. Breakfast the day I was there was an apple bake (not sure what the proper name is but it was delicious!) with sausage and fruit. All lovely and more than sufficient to get me started for the day.

The added bonus of seeing a raccoon and numerous blue jays in the back garden was a real treat.

Should I find myself in Astoria again I hope to stay here again, if Blossom will have me!

Perfect! I am one of those people who will research and research and research and RESEARCH til I find the perfect place. I planned a weeklong honeymoon trip for me and my husband. We drove from the Portland area out to Astoria for just an overnight stay and the drive itself out there was absolutely beautiful. It's such a small, quaint town. If you're looking for internet, your own TV and a lot of luxury frills, you won't get it. BUT, you will get a warm bed that doesn't make you wish for home, a delicious home-cooked breakfast and quality time to spend with your loved ones. My husband and I didn't get to check the internet or watch a sports game in our room, but that's what we needed - to spend time with one another and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the town.

My husband always complains about traveling and then being "ready to be in my own bed." This was NEVER the case with this place. I would definitely make a trip out there again and again. You won't regret it.

This beautiful little hideaway is truly amazing - from the first smiling greeting at the front door to the bag of fresh baked cookies and numerous goodbye waves as we left.
The Astoria Inn is one of several hundred Victorian homes in this historically significant city and Micky Cox has done a wonderful job of restoring it and decorating it to the enth degree. The guest rooms are warm and inviting and each one is uniquely different. We stayed in the Cape Lookout room which is decorated in red and white with antique furnishings. The views from the windows are truly "lookout" views overlooking the Columbia River and portions of its waterfont.
All common areas are all open to guests and Mickey is usually on hand for chatting and seeing to the wishes of her guests with endless cookies and bottomless pots of coffee. All decor is warm and comfortable and just plain fun to look at. There is something different at every turn of the head.
The breakfasts we enjoyed defy description. Wednesday morning we had what Mickey described as "sort of a Monte Cristo" but made with a split croissant stuffed with ham, turkey and Swiss cheese and dipped in an egg batter and fried golden brown. It was served with Marion berry jam and garnished with slices of avocado and Roma tomatoes.
Thursday morning Mickey served us Dutch Babies - individual German style fluffy pancakes filled with slices of fresh apples. The "babies" were served with a large brat-type sausage and garnished with fresh fruit slices. Somehow, Mickey found out I am diabetic and she made mine with Splenda and served it with sugarless syrup. That was above and beyond and totally unexpected. Mickey informed us that if any guest has special dietary needs, whe will do her best to accommodate them.
As an aside, there is plenty to do in the Astoria area which is rich with Lewis and Clark history. (Astoria is the oldest establishe settlement west of the Mississippi River.) There is an excellent maritime museum and Fort Clatsop is just seven miles west of town.
All in all, on a scale of one to ten, I would give the Astoria Inn a 14.
As we drove away, my wife said, "I don't want to leave." I didn't either.

This beautiful B & B sits high on a hill overlooking the town and bay . The view was great and the host and breakfast were wonderful. We had the Cape Mears room, which had a view of the bay. Only one chair makes it hard to find a comfortable place for two people to sit. We missed our internet and TV, but had a wonderful time in the town. We rode the trolley, walked the river, climbed the column and visited the Lewis and Clark Fort.

We spent 2 nights in the Cape Lookout room. What a view! The Columbia River below us, with all the barges and sailboat traffic -- it was spectacular, and we could even hear the returning sea lions barking at a local marina. (If you don't want to hear the sea lions, request a room on the back side of the building.)

Mickey, the owner, is an absolute delight, warm and friendly, knowledgeable about all the activities in Astoria and nearby areas, as well as a fantastic cook. She has a never-empty cookie jar on the kitchen counter, coffee, hot chocolate, and a wide assortment of teas are available most of the time.

Breakfast, served at 9 am, was delicious and completely different both days we were there. The first day she served a crustless quiche with homemade salsa and sour cream, pink grapefruit juice, chicken sausages, and great cottage potatoes; the second morning, we were treated to Dutch babies (puffy apple pancakes) with fresh fruit and sausage links, as well as orange juice. We never needed to think about lunch until 2 pm or later, breakfast was so good and so hearty.

With everyone having breakfast together, it made for a convivial time. The first morning, we talked to Mickey and another couple staying there, spending 1-1/2 hrs talking, before we all reluctantly tore ourselves away. No doubt guests are welcome to "eat and run" if they so desire, but they are also welcome to linger if they choose.

The rooms were comfortable and cozy, and the sitting room on the second floor stocked with a wide variety of books, as well as comfortable overstuffed chairs.

We had a great time! When we return to Astoria, we will definitely stay at the Astoria Inn.
