This beautiful little hideaway is truly amazing - from the first smiling greeting at the front door to the bag of fresh baked cookies and numerous goodbye waves as we left.
The Astoria Inn is one of several hundred Victorian homes in this historically significant city and Micky Cox has done a wonderful job of restoring it and decorating it to the enth degree. The guest rooms are warm and inviting and each one is uniquely different. We stayed in the Cape Lookout room which is decorated in red and white with antique furnishings. The views from the windows are truly "lookout" views overlooking the Columbia River and portions of its waterfont.
All common areas are all open to guests and Mickey is usually on hand for chatting and seeing to the wishes of her guests with endless cookies and bottomless pots of coffee. All decor is warm and comfortable and just plain fun to look at. There is something different at every turn of the head.
The breakfasts we enjoyed defy description. Wednesday morning we had what Mickey described as "sort of a Monte Cristo" but made with a split croissant stuffed with ham, turkey and Swiss cheese and dipped in an egg batter and fried golden brown. It was served with Marion berry jam and garnished with slices of avocado and Roma tomatoes.
Thursday morning Mickey served us Dutch Babies - individual German style fluffy pancakes filled with slices of fresh apples. The "babies" were served with a large brat-type sausage and garnished with fresh fruit slices. Somehow, Mickey found out I am diabetic and she made mine with Splenda and served it with sugarless syrup. That was above and beyond and totally unexpected. Mickey informed us that if any guest has special dietary needs, whe will do her best to accommodate them.
As an aside, there is plenty to do in the Astoria area which is rich with Lewis and Clark history. (Astoria is the oldest establishe settlement west of the Mississippi River.) There is an excellent maritime museum and Fort Clatsop is just seven miles west of town.
All in all, on a scale of one to ten, I would give the Astoria Inn a 14.
As we drove away, my wife said, "I don't want to leave." I didn't either.
