“Worst night ever-stay away!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

We stayed at this "hotel" after buying the deal on Groupon in December. We stayed at the Riverwalk Inn in June 2013, and had a horrible night. First, we paid for a King sized bed, but ended up in a room with a set of doubles. No explanation given as to why we did not get what we had booked months earlier. Too tired to complain, so we went with it. Once we looked around the room, we knew we had made a huge mistake. The stuffy room smelled like an old sock in a dirty dog kennel and had wallpaper peeling from the walls. There was a strange red stain on the old carpet. The furniture must have been left in the rooms while the hotel was empty and abandoned for many years. There was nothing quaint about it. We again tried to overlook the shabby surroundings, but the smell and filth made it difficult. We did not have deck furniture, and the slider had a strange sludge on it that made it cloudy and filthy. We could not even enjoy the view. When I called the front desk, no one answered. We stood on the deck and looked across the hotel and saw other rooms that had chairs on their decks. Also, the TV remote was broken, and there was no WIFI. Our experience was deeply disappointing and we felt ripped off. This hotel needs a lot of renovation to become even fairly acceptable. There is no air conditioning, so it was stuffy all night. I was awake most of the night, and trying to breathe through my mouth without smelling the disgusting smell that won't go away. We again tried to overlook things and just get through the night because it was pretty cheap. Once the sun came up, I was packed and ready to leave immediately. This was the worst night in a hotel I have ever had! When we checked out, the front desk staff asked how it was, and I could not even put into words how it was. Stay away from this dump, not worth any price! I will be consulting TripAdvisor before booking anymore Groupon deals from now on!

Room Tip: Bring an air mask

Really nice motel so don't be turned away by the looks. It is an older hotel but really clean with comfortable beds and a great view of the marina and bridge from each room. There is also free cookies and coffee in the lobby all the time. Excellent location and service.

Con: no elevators

Rather old property, but the welcome was great and the rooms were clean. Unfortunately, we were on the ground floor and the person above clomped about their room for 1.5 hours each morning (from 5am).

Room Tip: Choose an upstairs room.

I really wanted to love this place. We stayed in a family suite, which was comprised of one room with two queen beds and one room with two full-over-full bunk beds, adjoined by an interior door. The accommodations were perfect for our situation (myself and my husband traveling with our two small kids and my in-laws), but the room was filthy. The bathroom was awful - pubic hair on the floor, black dog hair everywhere, the toilet bowl looked like it hadn't been scrubbed in months, nastiness on the walls and switchplates... The carpet floor in the room was dirty (bits of leaves and wood, a bottlecap, wrappers), and I was afraid to even think about what I was sleeping on (or with!) in bed. The freezer in our room's mini-fridge was full of old popsicles (really, housekeeping, how hard is it to at least make it *look like* you actually clean the room between guests?!). I tried not to think too much about the filth around me, because we were there for only one night, but I will definitely never return. It's a shame, too, because it's a really fun little place. We loved the free bike rentals (the tandem bike was great!), the gamecube in our room and free game rentals, and free dvd rentals. The breakfast was decent (waffles, sausage links, cereal, instant oatmeal, bagels/muffins/toast, apples/oranges/bananas, coffee, juice) and the location was nice enough (fun to look out over the marina and the bridge), and it was convenient to be right near the trolley stop. Unfortunately I can't look past the downright uncleanliness of this place. Buyer beware!

Really nice motel for the price. There are 3 hotels in the same area that are a lot more money but don't be turned away by the looks or location of the Astoria Riverwalk. It's an older motel, but clean with comfortable beds, great location with views of the marina from every room. There's a free continental breakfast with waffles and hot sausages, free bikes to take out to explore the Riverwalk, and free DVD rentals. They also make cookies and provide free coffee and juice that you can get at anytime. They're trying really hard to compete with the 2 hotel chains that have moved into the area and I think they're doing a great job. Wonderful service.

We bought a groupon 2night king room deal, after booking 5 months in advance, we arrive at 1:30 and they say come back in 2 hrs rooms not ready. When we return at 5:00 they tell me there out of king rooms. They put me in a two queen bed room, it smelled like dog, bathroom was grose dirty with hair all over and god knows what on the walls by the tiolet(looked like puke). Breakfast room was full of bridge workers that are staying there for 10 months, no food left, so we went out for breakfast. The package was 2 nights, we only stayed one, we started getting stuffed up from dog smell. When it was Red Lion it was nice with super soft beds w/down comforts and Bath& Body Works products. People bring your own soap and shampoo and room spray if you have to stay there.

Room Tip: Stay at another Hotel

Staying in an older facility is not usually an issue for us and we can overlook chipped paint and worn furnishings as long as the room is clean and we sleep well. However there was a horrible chemical cleaning smell that would not go away despite having the balcony sliding doors open at all times when we were in the room. The balcony railing was very loose, which was a safety concern. Because we overheard that the hotel was fully booked, the ability to change rooms was not possible.
That said, there were several positives. The room was clean and the bed was great. Beautiful view of the marina, friendly staff and fresh baked cookies always available was a nice perk. Hopefully the new owners will be able to continue to update this hotel as it's in a great location.
