This bakery is amazing! Old fashioned service and prices, beautiful asked goods. Old booths, relaxed feel. Definitely worth a visit!

“What bakeries used to be.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

We saw this place when walking along after dinner. First thing the next morning we returned. Haven't seen pastries like this in years. I could have stayed all day and tried them all. Just like the old general store, the local guys were having coffee and a treat in the back booth.
I wish they would move to the Midwest!

“Amazing Old World Scandahoovian Bakery Establishment - Not To Be Missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2012

The Danish Maid in Astoria has been around for donkey's years, only the donkey has done nothing but improve for the last 40! It's a very old-fashioned place, with 4 tight booths (if you are a bit zaftig you won't quite fit) but try getting two cups of coffee and two pastries anywhere else for $3.60. I didn't try the milk this time, but in 1973 it had the coldest, most delish milk in town. The prices haven't gone up much since then - a fresh loaf of bread is only $1.50 - take that, chain food stores. The pastries are absolutely wonderful. Day old bread is 75 cents, and it's just fine. Gluten-free choices include regular and chocolate macaroons and some sort of melt-in-your mouth chocolate cookie confection. Huge cinnamon crispie things, amazing cardamon bread (a Scandinavian favorite) and dozens of other things "done right". Kids are welcome, and you can stop and read the local paper (on the back booth) at your convenience. No strip mall bakery or chain can compare! Service, amazing. Sandwiches & soups available too.

“It's a good, old type bakery with a large selection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2012

I'm not sure what the other reviewer is looking for. It is a bakery, not a Starbucks. You get regular coffee, not Starbucks. The pastries are better than Starbucks, Donuts - better. Service - probably better. Money goes to a local lady, not a large corporation.

If you want a coffeehouse, go to a coffeehouse. If you want a bakery, this is the second best bakery in town (First is Home bakery). it is in the middle of the business district, and is a convenient place to stop.

“Old School Bakery on the Main Drag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2012

The owner of this bakery worked it when in high school and now owns and manages it with his wife and adult children who all work it now. An older looking establishment it is located in the heart of the business district on the main highway through the city. Parking on the street available in the off-season only. We had some of the home made pastries with some tepidly average coffee with the pastries being above average. This would be a place you would stumble into if you were walking through all the kitschey shops on Main street and wanted to sit somewhere different than a Starbucks. We would not make an effort to return then again if we happened upon it again we might go in again.
