I wanted to dispel the bad reviews. I really did. I needed to get 2 rooms in Jacksonville. We had an early meeting and we just needed a place to sleep. My elderly father was meeting us so I needed to nail down a plan. I decided to go with a deal on Priceline for an undisclosed 2-star hotel for $29 (about $36 including tax) a night.
With my expectations lowered, I blindly pressed buy and wound up with reservations at the Extended Stay America on Salisbury Road in the Southpoint area. I was really disappointed because recent reviews were horrible. I prepared for the worst.
When we arrived, it took 10 minutes to find the person running the front desk. Elaine was perky and pleasant and dispelled the initial impression. One of the 2 rooms was ready so we checked in to room 218, above the courtyard by the pool.
The room was in need of remodeling but not horrible. The couch had a burn hole and there was a hole in the wall. But it didn’t smell and seemed clean. The room had a full kitchen in case we wanted to extend our stay.
We went out for the afternoon and arrived back at around 6pm. There were quite a few people getting ready for party out by the pool. Bianca, the front desk clerk, told us that the long-term residents have a weekly Sunday night dinner. Music was thumping and they had a grill fired up. We asked Bianca how late that would be going on since we had an early meeting. She assured us that the music would be off by 8:30 at the latest.
At 9:30 the music was still thumping just below our window. My husband called the front desk and Bianca said she would make them turn it off. My mantra of $29, $29, $29 continued in my head.
At 11:45, not only is the music still going but everyone is now drunk and talking in that loud drunk voice that’s very annoying to any nearby sober person. I called and said, “Come on, it’s not fair to those of us who need to get up early.” Bianca assured me she was going out there immediately to stop it. I watched by the window but she never showed up. At this point, I considered calling the police.
The music finally stopped around 12:10am but the party raged on until 1:30. I finally drifted off to sleep only to be awakened at 3:30 by out upstairs neighbor who evidently got ‘lucky’. Thankfully that only lasted about 10 seconds but then the two of them proceeded to stomp around for the next hour. I had plenty of time to imagine how anyone could take that many steps in such a small place. They came and finally went at 4:30.
The alarm went off an hour and a half later at 6:00. The bathroom light was “too romantic” as my husband put it – with about the same wattage of a very dim night light. The neon bulb was well beyond time to be changed. The hair dryer didn’t work. Perky Elaine was back in the morning. I had to wait for someone to find her again so I could check out. This time it only took 5 minutes. She asked how everything was and when I complained she said the music is supposed to be turned off by 10pm at the latest.
Given the price and the lowered expectations I wanted to give them 3 stars but the fact that they either are unwilling or unable to control their long term residents, I would have to recommend that you stay elsewhere.
