As I understood Blue Bamboo in Jacksonville, I erroneously assumed this would be an Asian restaurant reminiscent of those in other major cities. Had I read more, I would have known that it was “Blue Bamboo Style and Hip Asian Comfort Food”.
Seeing good reviews I decided to bring a friend from China to dinner on New Year’s Eve. We were seated immediately upon arrival but, I wasn’t very fond of having a table that wobbled and had been placed directly in front of a closed door to the kitchen and in the functional wine storage room. I am however, happy that the servers didn’t need any of the wine stored at my right knee! The projector screen mounted on the ceiling was a nice touch…if you’re going to a convention. (This should be taken down when not in use - it's just tacky)
Despite the minor inconveniences, the server was very accommodating, if not perhaps a bit uninformed. The menu looks great and the food was very well prepared as well but I believe it would help to have a little more definition. For example, the BBQ Duck Wonton Crips, while very good tasting, seemed to be lacking when trying to find the duck. Maybe it’s supposed to be duck sauce? And, the Lobster Cantonese required explanation as to the type of lobster and whether or not it was shelled before or after cooking.
The Korean Tacos were excellent (read that – you’ve got to try these), both taste and presentation.
For an entrée I selected the ½ Canton Roast Duck. It too, was excellent even if it wasn’t the Peking Duck I had become accustomed to in other cities. And finally, the Lamb Rack was also excellent.
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for “something different” – or – “out of the ordinary” as overall all, it was pretty darn good. I’d also recommend that you sit up front, to avoid the noise from behind the door to the kitchen.
