Description: The Sandollar was originally built in 1954 by a gentleman who lived in Fort George Island. This small but capable restaurant was able to capitalize on the booming American shrimp market from Mayport across the river. The business thrived and created the tradition of serving fresh and local seafood at low costs. This was when Heckscher Drive still had bridges that were made of wood and moved with the tide. After a while, the area demanded a larger facility and in 1988, a new building was constructed by Dwayne Williams, who owned La Cruise Casino and Restaurant in Mayport. He kept the tradition of providing customers with fresh, quality seafood at a low price. Today, under that same direction from the original owner, we look forward to bringing back the same great seafood that The Sandollar brought in when it opened. We are proud to be serving our local community for over 15 years now and will continue to give back and assure our locals that the next decade will provide the same great service, incredible food, and innovation that we are known for.

“SUNDAY BUFFET”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Great Sunday buffet. Went there after church today. Joe loves breakfast and I like lunch. Because I can't eat so much I usually prefer to order from a menu. However, the price was so much of a value we both made our own selections from the line.

View was marvelous, also -- ships going and coming on the St. John's River. Just doesn't get any better.

Buffet included all versions of eggs, grits, bacon, sausage, waffles, jambalaya, rice, cheeses, and fruits on the breakfast side. Luncheon side had wonderful mac & cheese, steamed veggies, casseroles, etc. for sides. Being on the river the seafoods were wonderful, as well, including fresh caught shrimp from early morning. Lest I forget there were carving stations!

I met the chef who was very attentive to the buffet making sure things were fresh and at proper temps. This place burned a year ago and has rebuilt with new ownership. I believe they will succeed.

It was a perfect combination with wonderful service from our server, Chase, at a $19.99 price per person sans drinks. Give it a try.

“Unexpected but wonderful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

We decided to give this a try since it was on the water, and just recently redone! We didn't know what to expect and it is a little deceiving when you first pull up. We thought just another sports bar, BUT NO! That is certainly not the case the case. They do have a bar with outside seating and it looks fun; however, they also have a very nice restaurant side with eclectic chairs and beautiful tables. Add on to that the spectacular view of the St. Johns and Wow! Our waiter arrive and immediately he made us feel welcome and had a great sense of humor. He was very engaging and was very attentive. The food was remarkable. My husband had the gator tail app and stated it was the best he ever ate! I had the mussels on a recommendation and they too were delicious. Our next course featured the king fish filets and the ahi tuna steak. Both were cooked to perfection were also delicious. Unfortunately we were so full we could not partake in dessert! I am giving them 4 out of 5 only because their wines list was small and general. All in all I definitely plan on going back.

“Great lunch menu overlooking the bay and ferry docks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

This was a (we're in the area) spur of the moment stop. We were pleasantly surprised. The burgers and seafood sandwiches/plates were delicious. One of the side choices was black beans and rice -- among the very best I've enjoyed.

The atmosphere is casual. The service both friendly and efficient. And the view is really nice. We saw the ferry cross several times plus a beautiful sailboat and other watercraft. All in our party of six would return again without hesitation.

“Great location, mediocre food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We were a party of 6, and happy to try this restaurant after a whole morning spent kayaking with the nearby Amelia Kayak.
We chose to have lunch indoor, but large windows offer spectacular views on the St John's river.
Service was quick, helpful and very friendly.
So, what can be wrong? Food, only food.
When we saw the buffet, we chose to pass, and went for the menu.
Some of us had the $12.95 Sandollar sandwich, consisting of grilled redfish. Nothing very inspiring with it. Spicy enough; was it to cover some crude, frozen fish?
Others had the $11.95 Crab cake sandwich. How much crab does it encompass? Probably some, but not much. By far not the best crab cake we ever had; not even in the competition.
This being said, shall I come back? Probably yes for the atmosphere (great location, live music in the evening), knowing that we have to compromise on food, which by the way is offered at a very decent price.

“Hidden gem that's worth the drive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013 via mobile

Drive south on A1A about 15 minutes past the plantation and its right on the left - on the St. John's river, across from the ferry. Very tradition seafood house, it has beautiful views and a casual atmosphere. Great seafood selection and one of the few places my wife said the shrimp didn't taste fishy. Humongous portions. Seriously, I'm a big guy and I had to get a doggie bag...which never happens. Very good value. So glad we finally came across it. Will definitely be back.
