“Expected better.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

This is one of Jax's "fancy" restaurants; the kind you celebrate a special occasion at. Maybe an anniversary, special date, ritzy business party.
I was with a group of about 20, we had reservations and were lucky to be seated with a view of the river after a quick tour of the salad bar.
We had three servers assigned to the party. despite this the service was slow, WAY too much time between seating and ordering, receiving food, etc. Huge disappointment. My table was the first to order, last to receive food.
They have an amazing early bird menu 4:30-6:30PM and there was another special menu for the "Eat Up Downtown" event. The price for a three course meal was only $25! You could even get prime rib, much to the delight of several in the party.
Out server didn't seem to have a clue what wines to pair with our choices, I am shocked that there is no sommelier there to assist? The wine that was suggested was much too sweet with my meal.
I had the gazpacho to start, it was wonderful. Full of fresh veggies, chunky tomato and sour cream. I had the chicken romano and it was also delicious as were the Yukon Gold potatoes served with it. the only person at the table hugely disappointed with her meal ordered cod and the portion was tiny, REALLY tiny compared to what we all received.
I was not at all impressed with my crème Brule, it was just average. The one served at Maggiano's is far superior, but neither is as good as the old 24 Miramar served.
Having been in food service in the past, I could say there is quite a bit of room for improvement. I understand being unobtrusive and allowing people to enjoy a meal. I should not have had to repeated wave a server over to take dirty plates, bring dessert, etc.
Food 4 only because of the lack of a sommelier.

“Disgusting Experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Took a guest of our company - Bad mistake - Started with a 430pm reservation in which we had to wait 10 minutes to be seated in a empty restaurant. In the mean time saw waiter mopping up water from under salad bar. Got the tour of salad bar and were seated. Waiter took our order and we proceeded to the salad bar (bad news starts here). Salad bar serving bowls were left over from the day before. Each had very little in them and you could taste other food flavors than what you were eating. Example: tasted fish and cucumbers that were not on my plate. Next came the Lobster Bisque that we have bragged on before but this time was watery and had shells in it. Then came the entries and our guest had HAIR on his plate. WOW bad impression. and finally we thought we would try and have a cup of coffee to finish out the night and guess what IT WAS COLD. Spent 200 dollars for three people had no alcohol. We have been dining at the Chart House in Jacksonville for years. And have taken large groups there in the past. The service was ok. Food was not up to par for the price you pay. Ruth Chris is a better choice next door. The restaurant was not ready for customers or reservations at 430pm. We will unfortunately not be going back or will we recommend it to anyone else. PS: did not contact the manger because we did not want to cause a scene in front of our guest but advised waiter of the hair in the plate.

“For Special Occasions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

When we're down in Jacksonville from New York to spend time at our condo, it's the same time as our wedding anniversary. For the last few years we've celebrated it here. It's a little expensive, so it's a special occasion place for us, but everything about it is first class. Valet parking, personalized menus noting our special occasion, professional service, delicious food and a beautiful view of the St. John's River. I had the Gazpacho to start. Flavorful, lots of vegetables, but in need of a little more heat. My wife started with the grilled watermelon, spinach and feta cheese salad, which she loved. My entree was the New Wave surf and Turf which consisted of braised short ribs and seared scallops. The scallops were perfectly seared and tender inside and the short ribs required no knife. The only bad note was the warm, but not hot Yukon Gold mashed potatoes. Mt wife loved her baked stuffed shrimp. There were no leftovers. Dessert for me was creme brulee with raspberries and for my wife and apple and cherry cobbler. Our waiter, Parker, was one of the best that we have encountered. He was personable, attentive without being a pest, and paced our meal nicely. He made us feel special and he should give classes to all of the college kids out there who call their guests "you guys". It was a special night for us and The Chart House made it even more so. Bravo!

“Elegant dining on the river”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

We like this beautiful shell shaped restaurant, but it is very expensive so we save it for anniversaries and birthdays. The view of the river as the sun sets and the lights of the bridges and the city turn on is very romantic. We indulge in the Macadamia Crusted Mahi with peanut sauce, mango relish, served with asian green beans. The best salad bar in town, even has caviar. For dessert, the yummy molten chocolate lava cake. Can't wait for the next visit.
