“Some things were not perfect but had really good time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2012

I've been there a couple times lately ... This place has mixed reviews and I can understand why.

First off, the food. This is mostly upscale Mexican food, but, frankly, not all dishes are the same. They all look good and interesting, but, honestly, some were excellent and some still good but could have been done better. The same applies to the place, it could be loud and noisy and it doesn't look formal enough.

This is really a great place to go with a group or friends or colleagues, have some excellent margarita, share, some appetizers, talk and have a good time. This is really when this place shines. All the sudden everyone is relaxed, loose and enjoying time. Also, this is really not that expensive for this kind of food. But if you you want to go solo or have some formal dinner - the chances are you might get disappointed.

“Cacophony! Cacophony!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

Maria Maria in Walnut Creek set our expectation bar very high when we dined at 8PM on a Saturday night in its newer Danville (our hometown) location. 2 years ago, we had a 5 rating experience in Walnut Creek, on a beautifully warm summer evening, dining at our creekside table, while thoroughly enjoying our wonderfully prepared higher-end savory Mexican dinners. The Danville location is a 2!

The parking lot was full, table's still 90% occupied and the live entertainment (solo guitarist with a loud voice & audio system) was belting out the tunes. Overall he was very good, especially his Adele impersonation. Since our window table was like being in a loud bar (the ever present big screen displaying the basketball game) we should have shifted into bar mode eschewing dinner by singing along, drinking more and yelling louder to make ourselves heard. NOT what we had in mind! Our evening plan was to discuss our Oscar ballot selections for the following evenings Oscar party. NO I SAID TUBA ATLANTIC (terrific short feature, highly recommend)

The agua, chips and salsa server was somewhere in outer space. Earth to La Luna (terrific animated short by Pixar, highly recommend) The menu offered a wide variety of dishes. I chose my Server Surprise Me (last time for a long time) for my entree. Out came Tequila Shrimp in an iron over-baking skillet (The Iron Lady cooking the dish could have used a better "script/recipe"). The server stated everybody loves this dish. He can no longer make this claim (dry, dry, no flavor, flavor) The Mrs enjoyed her pasilla steak enchilada which was quite flavorful.

At this point the place is clearing out but not the 2 obnoxious singing ladies at our adjacent table (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close had sub-zero chance to win Best Picture). I could not wait to leave. My displeasure was expressed and the perfunctory "free" dessert offering was made. Admitting to hypocrisy and a Flan addiction, I ordered what turned out to be an excellent Flan in a pond of sweet assorted berries.

Like being on War Horses, we galloped away, never to return again! This establishment is in need of a little Help!

“Consistent Yum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

Love, love, love Maria Maria. I've been to the Walnut Creek and Danville locations, and prefer the Danville restaurant. Very busy, so be prepared. Good idea to make a reserv
ation for weekends. Every once in a while Costco has gift card deals for Maria Maria -- don't hesitate; you'll use them!
Parking can be challenging on Taco Tuesdays (tacos $1) or Thirsty Thursdays (margaritas $5), but otherwise it's worth it. Cool vibe and great non-typical food. My absolute favorite is the pepper stuffed with carnitas in a spicy sauce -- yum! Tried some of the new seafood offerings, and also yum! Whether a menu staple or something new, their yum is pretty consistent.

“slipping”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2011

Recently took our 14 y/o grandson here and was sorely disappointed. What has happened? The tacos used to be amazing. Instead of steak they are using a pulled beef that is icky and tasteless. None of us could eat them :-( Too bad as this was a fav spot before.
