During our visit to historic sites of the Hudson River Valley, we learned of Joseph's from our Park Service Guides while touring the Roosevelt homes. Our first thought was that it was probably just another restaurant trying to claim fame by locating in a building with historic interest. Our second thought was that we could have a steak most anywhere. But on a whim, after a day exploring and hiking on trails, we decided to stop in. What a pleasant surprise... on so many levels! For starters, though we were dressed for a hike, we were welcomed warmly by Michael. He was so very personable and hospitable, telling us about the restaurant, the menu, the specials, the drinks, answering questions, asking us about ourselves. We felt as if we were the only guests. But this was how Michael interacted with each set of guests. We were impressed with his ability to carry on meaningful, unique conversations with each table, never repeating himself, and always picking up where he left off when he returned to each table. As well, Michael was a one-man show on our particular visit. He greeted us, he served us, and he tended bar. His wine recommendation was spot-on for our dinner! As we sat enjoying the music, atmosphere, and ambiance, the very amiable Joseph made his rounds to each and every table, talking with his guests and making certain they were comfortable and pleased. A short while later, Joseph emerged with his dessert tray, reminding us to save room. He not only told us about each offering, but he shared about each one... the ones his wife had made, the locally sourced ingredients, the ones that would suit us based on our tastes. We were touched as he beamed with loving pride over his wife's creations. Soon, our food arrived. The presentation, the temperature, the taste -- all far, far exceeded expectations. It was truly the best steak we have ever had! We are fans of the Capital Grill and Ruth's Chris, but Joseph's steaks exceeded theirs on all levels. I cannot recall when we have savored a meal as we did at Joseph's. As our plates were cleared and the last night of our vacation was winding to a close. I was so satisfied and thought nothing could top this experience. Next, Michael appeared, offering coffee and after dinner cocktails. I was enticed by Michael's special Espresso Martini. He slipped away, mixed in a little of this and a little of that, and reappeared with the most deliciously sumptuous dessert martini I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. What a special evening, on so many levels! Thank you, Michael & Jospeh! We wish you much continued success!
