“A great time back into time - take it while you can!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2014

The Quality Inn at General Lee's Headquarters is a fantastic trip in time in more ways than one but please visit it soon as it will be closing forever on December 31st 2014. This Circa 1930 Lincoln Highway roadside tourist lodge will be knocked down in early 2015 because the real Gettysburg Battlefield Headquarters of Confederate General Robert E. Lee which is a museum run by the hotel on it's property will be "Saved" and the also historic (in it's own way) period tourist lodge is alas, of the WRONG period. The place overlooks the battlefield, has always had great service, is spotlessly clean and very well taken care of and is one of the last examples of this this sort of folksy facility in the vicinity. There is a very good free light breakfast and the staff has always been very kind and helpful during my many stays. It will be sorely missed!

Room Tip: All rooms are very good.

Our family has stayed at the General Lee twice a year for over 10 years on our way to the Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. We chose it for its charm, size and comfort. We have stayed in the rooms as well as the suites. All were extremely comfortable. The staff has always been extremely helpful and accomodating

.My 11 year old grandson believes it to be the best place to stay in the world..and is heartbroken to think he will not see it again! The whole family is in mourning. We appreciate the desire to restore the headquarters but it seems that if the restoration is not truly imminent, the Civil War Trust could let the motel continue to run while they create the final plan and/or get the financing to actually do the restoration....perhaps the Trust could rent the motel to the current owners and make some money for the restoration.....

This was our second stay at this Quality Inn. We really love the historic feel of this location. The more roadside motel feel. We could look out our motel window and actually see the battlefield. It took two doors to actually enter our room, so a definite feel of security. The pool area - although our timing didn't allow us to use - looked clean and inviting. The breakfast had the usual continental breakfast choices. This is a sad review as our Gettysburg tour guide told us that this motel is closing this fall and the location is being restored to its Civil War General Lee timeframe. Unfortunate for those of us that have fallen in love with being able to stay right in the middle of history.

Great location! Almost too great! In fact, the Gettysburg Historical Foundation has commandeered this property because of its historical significance. If you want to stay there, do so before the end of the year. But buyer beware: the imminent closure of the hotel may have already rubbed off on management’s attitude towards its clientele.

We lucked out (sort of) with the queen suite. It’s a quaint room located further from the road in a remote encasement with the adjoining king suite. The price was quite reasonable, and the bedding and bathroom were fine. The room was dark, but we didn't spend so much time there for it to bother us.

Our troubles occurred when we were awakened after midnight because of the constant flickering of the fireplace’s pilot light. Evidently it does not go out, and it’s more than a faint glimmer. “Light” sleepers – those sensitive to light – beware. The lady on duty reported that there had been previous complaints but that there was nothing that could be done. I could have dealt with that problem alone, but in my attempt to turn it off, I had activated the gas fireplace, and the lady said I would have to wait until the timer ran out. In fact, the fireplace NEVER turned off … not until long after we checked out. The room became stifling hot, and the humidity outside was oppressive, too. I ran the A/C full blast, but it was no match for the gas generated heat. It was well over 90 degrees that night in the room. My Saturday was shot, because I never got back to sleep. Easily one of the most unpleasant nights I've experienced in a while. I implored the manager the next morning once he arrived to credit us for the night, and he agreed.

Fast forward one week after several unanswered emails and voicemail messages, and I am now in formal dispute with a very supportive Choice Hotels customer service, because the Gettysburg Quality Inn manager had a sudden and unexpected change of face. He now claims that -- because the timer of the fireplace had been changed prior to our arrival, the fireplace had been regularly inspected, and I chose not to wait for maintenance to arrive from off site to service the fireplace at 3 AM -- the issue with the fireplace “has [his] maintenance staff as well as himself, in turmoil” and he cannot offer any credit. He did, however, reimburse us for the no-show charge that was erroneously imposed for the reservation earlier in the week that his staff had forgotten to cancel when we made the final one. Wow. How generous!

The only other misgiving about the hotel – besides the fact that we didn't sleep, were mistakenly charged for a no-show, and then blindsided by the manager who reneged on his commitment to credit us for sleeping in a sauna -- was the horrendous breakfast. Even though it was complimentary, it’s hard to imagine anything worse -- insipid coffee, silver dollar egg patties, mystery meat sides, artificial syrup and peanut butter toppings for on waffles from processed batter, no cheese for toast, etc.

It’s really too bad that our experience had to be soured this way. I found the staff very pleasant (including Missy, Barb, and Shauna), the location seemed ideal, and the hotel, itself, had great potential. In the end, it’s a moot point, because it will soon be history, like the town around it, and the manager’s inexplicable apathy towards his customers.

I was trying to make it from the Poconos to northern VA, but hit several traffic tieups and decided to stop for the night in Gettysburg. I pulled over, checked TripAdvisor, and made the quick drive here. Got an excellent semi-isolated room at a great price, with very helpful check-in staff. I did not use the pool, but it looked very nice. View of Lee's HQ (and free tour) and of a part of the first day's battlefield was great. I'm only sorry it won't be around much longer, but I'm all in favor of the further historical preservation that will be causing it to vanish.

Room Tip: Two rooms at the end, farthest from Lee's HQ, are excellent.

Check-in staff friendly, helpful and professional. Our room was ready when we arrived early and was spacious and clean with a fridge for drinks etc. Inn was attractive and bright with perfectly good pool, although this was a little too cold and it would have been nice if it opened a little earlier for an early morning wake-up dip! There were views over the battlefield as well as a good restaurant (Appalacian Brewery) next door which meant you didn't have to drive anywhere for dinner if you did not want to. Small museum was pretty good. Room included a breakfast which was perfectly adequate. Would definitely recommend.

I have stayed here 6 times in the last 12 years....our Corvette club has stayed at this hotel for the last 30 years....absolute disaster that it and the ABC brewpub next door are closing to make way for ....NOTHING!!! We wish you all the best!! And if you get a chance to visit Gettysburg before they close I would highly recommend you stay here!! Just staying right on the battlefield is awesome and the history of the hotel and General Lees Headquarters is neat! And the brewpub next door food can't be beat!!
