“Convenient and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

This is away from the hustle and bustle (and somewhat touristy) center of Gettysburg, which is a good thing. And it's close to the battlefield, so you have the best of both worlds. Breakfast was excellent; although it's served at 9:00 (why so late?), they accommodated our request for an early meal so we could get out to the battlefield by 8:30. Rooms are very comfortable although, based on what we could hear from neighbors, the walls are a bit thin.

We stayed in the Swan Cottage and for the money we paid I don't think it was worth it.
We were greeted nicely and were given all our instructions on the cottage and that was about the extent of our interaction with the staff. Normally at B&B's you are made to feel like part of a family here we certainly didn't feel that way We were also told that were no more ghost stories told on Fridays. We were told the "owner" after 25 years of doing them is bored with it and has stopped giving them....then get it OFF your website!!

When we arrived at the cottage the air conditioner was turned up and most vents were closed leaving the little place warm & stuffy. We couldn't find a fan in the cottage and was told the next morning at breakfast no fans were available. Only one double bed in the place that was very soft and probably needed to be replaced. There was a fold out couch in living area & a roll away bed that was very small but I guess served the purpose.

Bathrooms were renovated with new fixtures and showers which were nice but had low pressure.

In the morning we were saddened to find NO coffee for the coffee maker in Swan Cottage!! There is a nice pot to brew coffee along with cups, sugar and creamer, only there is NO coffee

We did attend the morning history program and Mike Vice was the historian. He was absolutely Amazing and full of soo much information, we absolutely LOVED him!!!! After Mikes presentation we were seated for breakfast. The dinning room was very beautiful with each table set with crystal candelabras and lovely place settings. Our breakfast was served and we were pleasantly pleased with French toast, fruit, sausage, potatoes it was really nice.

We spent a fantastic day touring Gettysburg and all it has to offer! That late afternoon we called back to the B&B to inquire about getting breakfast early the next day. We found out our dogs at the kennel back home were sick and we wanted to hit the road earlier that next morning. We were told that was not possible. Just that morning there was a mother and daughter eating their breakfast at 7:45am so I'm not sure why they couldn't accommodate us??? Even muffins in a to go bag would have worked for us. We were only told we may be able to get breakfast 15min early but at that point why bother??? Just NOT accommodating like you expect B&B's to be.

I also just wanted to make some general comments about the grounds around the Swan Cottage. They were very over grown and wild looking and wasn't inviting to walk around. The entrance was un inviting and could have used some personal touches and/or some hanging baskets or planters.

We found this review to be very helpful. We have addressed several of the issues that were mentioned in the review. The spring rains caught up with the cottage in several ways. We have added another dehumidifier in the basement that has addressed the spring stuffiness in the cottage. The trees in the front yard had a vigorous growth spurt and did fill in the paths, almost overnight. We have pruned back the paths in the cottage woods so the cottage has a more interesting garden. We apologize that the coffee container was empty. We now doing a better job at monitoring the supplies at the cottage. If you do find yourself short of anything, please ask. The cottage has a phone and we will be happy to bring anything you need.

The ghost stories and the breakfast were mis-communications. I apologize for the confusion. Our afternoon host asked if guests were interested in ghost stories. The guests said that they were staying in town for the evening, so we didn't offer ghost stories. We would have had a story session if anyone said they were coming. The discussion was related to whether or not the guests were interested, not whether the owner was interested.

As for breakfast, we can offer our full breakfast close to our breakfast time of 9 AM. Early eaters can have a simplified breakfast, but many of the baked goods are not ready early. We cook everything fresh that morning. A typical early breakfast would be eggs, bacon, and an English muffin.

Excellent B&B! Friendly service, interesting property, delicious breakfast. And close to town. My wife and I will be back. We really enjoyed the history presentations and I got to fire a musket (blanks). It's venues like this that make travel a fun adventure. Unfortunately, the ghost did not appear in our room but we did sleep well! :-)

We won a Gettysburg package trip as part of a charity auction and really didn't know what to expect. As it turned out, the Battlefield Bed and Breakfast Inn is a real gem and one that we've thoroughly enjoyed. The staff is absolutely top notch, the rooms are comfortable and well appointed with (as you'd expect) a Civil War-era feel. The first-floor parlor is done in period style, with a late-nineteenth-century "coffin" piano and other touches. The dining room is beautiful. Breakfast (which was excellent) is preceded by an hour-long history lecture each morning, and these are by top-notch historians (retired museum directors and so on). The only downside is that they currently are doing construction of a wedding facility in the back and the construction was a little noisy after breakfast, but that's around the time that guests are getting ready to leave for sightseeing, so the Inn can't really be faulted. We couldn't have asked for a friendlier, better quality historic location in which to stay.

Room Tip: The Georgia 7th room is removed from the others in the main house, so it's very quiet and well s...

Lets start with the bad; don't come here if great bathing facilities are your thing. My friend and I stayed in the Reilly Suite and the bathroom was clean but strictly vintage 1970s. Worse was the pressure issue, my friend was okay at 6:30 am, a weak shower but acceptable. When I got in at 7 am, it was literally a trickle. I settled for evening showers. This is definately an area where the owner could invest in some serious upgrades.

The okay; our suite had a double and two twins in an adjacent room (our reason for staying), butu my friend kindly gave me the double even though I lost the toss because at 5 ft. 9 in. my feet hung off the end. She found the bed hard (nd the room crowded. My bed was a bit soft, but comfortable.

The good. THe decor is nice, not expensive but traditional type furnishings, nice wood floors and a nice diningroom. It is a historical house and the parlour is just very neat with beams and the original stone walls. There is supposed to be a ghost, we saw a bucket move in an unexplained way, but no great hauntings.

The great: the food was excellent, cookies, coffee, tea and water present 24/7 and a tasty substantive brerakfast. An hour before breakfast, there is an hour long lecture on the history of the civil war. Our speaker was a retired park historian and very interesting. And it is a 10 minute drive to the Battlefield (actually the B&B IS part of the Battlefield!) and the town of Gettysburg. There is also a trolley at the end of a 1/4 mile drive to town, but we didn't try it. Very convenient. And the staff were lovely and helpful. The place includes a large number of resident cats (none in the house if you are not cat friendly) some of whom are social and one of which my friend had to carry out from in front of the car so I could park, and a donkey. The B&B allows dogs, so pet friendly. It is out in the country and this made it quite peaceful, rather than the B&Bs in town, which I expect could be quitet noisy.

Room Tip: We never saw it but there is a bridal suite in an adjacent barn that has a jaccuzi tub, and other am...

We thoroughly enjoyed our all-too-brief visit to the Battefield B&B. The morning breakfast was delicious and the preceding history lecture very informative. The staff was very friendly. The place is pet friendly and it was nice to see the other guests who had dogs being treated with such welcome. I would definitely see myself staying here again.
