We stumbled across this beautiful place late in the afternoon, as we wandered through Gettysburg planning on serious sightseeing of the battlefield the next day. Although the room rate was a little higher than we wanted to spend, the fact it was built originally in the 18th century, and was right on the square (traffic circle), and was central to the downtown area, we decided to stay two nights.
Parking was inconvenient and expensive, but less than downtown Atlanta at $30/day with valets. We were able to catch a free shuttle a block away that took us to the battlefield, to a nearby restaurant at the end of the day, and then right back in front of the hotel after dinner. Thanks to Gettysburg College.
Our room was very large with a comfortable king sized bed, the water-jet tub in the bathroom, and lots of closet space.
We overlooked the square, which was a sales point for us, but I did not plan on how much traffic there would be all night. Including very loud bar patrons at all hours. This is a major traffic hub, and there are 18 wheelers all night long. The view is fascinating, but not quiet.
The fireplace was a nice touch and would be really necessary during a cold winter, as none of the windows fit well.
We ate both breakfasts and one dinner at the restaurant in house, and thought it was a bit pricey, and not especially well served. The staff seems to know a lot about the food, but not that coffee cups should be kept refilled. Also, like so many places, they think a serving of juice in the morning should be 16 ounces. Otherwise, all other servings are on the skimpy side. Nice patio, and attractive bar, although we did not use either.
The public rooms are well appointed and comfortable.
The staff are all very friendly, but we could have probable saved at least $ 200. at a nearby Marriott Courtyard or Holiday Inn Express.
