“Absolutely Loved the Cricket House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2007

The Cricket House is an absolutely wonderful place to spend your vacation.

Four of us (seniors) stayed at the Cricket House from July 4 -11/07 while we attended the Civil War Re-Enactment and toured the historical areas of Gettysburg and surrounding areas . What a wonderful place to return to after a long day of touring.

First of all, the location was excellent. Only about 2-1/2 blocks to downtown Gettysburg and all of the shops and restaurants. One of the battlefields was only a half block away. The Cricket House is located in a very private, quiet area of town.

There is a small grocery store not far away (Kennie's) that has all the groceries you would need. It was about 5 blocks down Middle Street.

The house itself is amazing. It was immaculately clean when we arrived. The kitchen was fully equipped. We used the downstairs living area as the second bedroom. The futon was pulled out and already made up for us when we arrived. It was a very comfortable bed. The upstairs bedroom and living area was most comfortable with a jacuzzi tub and waterfall shower. The decor of the house was amazing - quite a few antique artifacts were displayed all around the house. There were 3 TV's and DVD's. The selection of books ranged from civil war history to classics to interior decorationg.

We spend quite a bit of time in the back yard. It was so private with very beautiful flowers and rose bushes all around. At night the fireflies were buzzing all around and entertained us. And of course the Spa. What a wonderful way to relax and unwind after a day of touring. We enjoyed the spa every night.

John and his wife have defintely made the Cricket House into a wonderful home away from home. We are definitely recommending this home to all of our friends and we hope to return to Gettysburg and the Cricket House in the future.

Perfect lodging in a perfect location. Every amenity is seen to. A true home away from home. The Cricket House was in walking distance of downtown Gettysburg and its local restaurants and shops. We even walked to the National Cemetery from there. It was a great place to relax after a full day at the battlefield and other locals. We will certainly be back some day.

A neat place if you love charm and privacy. Close to everything but doesn't feel rushed. Every amenity you'll ever want and more. Have nothing but good things to say about the Cricket House. Just wish we lived closer and could visit there more often!

  • Liked — The privacy and having the whole house to ourselves
  • Disliked — That we live so far away and can't visit there more often!
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring some candles...this place is romantic.

We recently spent 3 nights in Gettysburg, PA (Aug. 4,5,6) and stayed at the VERY charming Cricket House bed and breakfast.

WOW, it was amazing (I know many people overuse the word amazing, but we've stayed LOTS of places around the country, mostly 4 star or ocean escapes and we were impressed.)

First, upon arrival we were greeted with a bottle of chilling white wine (AND a bottle of red wine for later!!). Nice. (Oh, and the ktichen is a full-size kitchen with coffee maker, full fridge, stove, micro, dishes, table, etc....).

The decadent accomodations & attention to detail just blew us away: a full, completely private landscaped area with your own jacuzzi, cobblestone path with charming bistro table and a really cool grill.

And then there's the actual house...my oh my. The Cricket House is a completely furnished HOUSE (not a big room, a HOUSE!) with clever decor & thoughtful design, including a lofted bedroom, unique fine furniture (no skimping there!) , gorgeous rugs, woods, stone all around the house, a cozy sunk-in living room & the NEATEST master jacuzzi tub I've ever seen -- it has a rainfall effect with a cute side-window -- a definite must for couples. Hmmm.....

They also have complete "technology" wired in the house -- WiFi, fancy tvs (at least 2 that I remember) with DVDs, etc.. We were too busy to use most of it, but the WiFi was handy as we had brought our laptop along. Also, full washer and dryer tucked away in a cute closet. Handy!

The Cricket House is located 2 blocks (if that) from the heart of downtown Gettysburg. You can walk in any direction and hit either the battleground, shops, or historical attractions. There is a lot to do and see in the town/area and I would recommend staying at least 5 days if you can swing it.

What amazed us the most is that one can stay at the Cricket House for the same price as a B&B room anywhere else in this historic town, except that you get the WHOLE HOUSE, not just one room.

The Cricket House proprietors, John and Deb, officially opened the house for business a few months ago and have already mastered the finer points of inn-keeping. No glitches. They have thought of every single thing a traveler would want. And they really seem to enjoy caring for this house. It's nice to experience this in an age of "repeat customer apathy."

The Cricket House truly re-defines a vacation experience and we will return soon!
