The home of George and Hettie Shriver appears much the same way it did when it was first built in 1860. Today, guides in period dress recount the harrowing story of the Shriver family's experiences. The thirty minute tour includes all four floors including the Confederate sharpshooters nest in the attic and Shrivers' Saloon in the cellar. The story of George Shriver was not well-known until 1996 when the house he built on Baltimore Street, which sat abandoned for nearly 30 years, was painstakingly restored to its original 1860s appearance. Today, the Shrivers’ story is one of the most intriguing stories told when it comes to the civilian aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg.______________________________________________________________________CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS TOURSTake a step back in time to discover how Christmas was celebrated in the mid-1800s. Enter the 19th century home of George, Hettie, Sadie (7), and Mollie (5) Shriver as they prepare for the Christmas holidays. See the candle-laden Christmas tree in its place of honor on the parlor table as a fire roars in the fireplace of the handsome room decorated with hand-made holiday greenery. After hanging stockings on the mantle, the girls set out milk and cookies in anticipation of a visit from Santa Claus on that magical night. While soldiers faced the perils of the Civil War, Christmas offered a few moments of cheer that would help brighten the lives of those at home. Learn how families celebrated the holidays while fathers, sons, and husbands were separated from loved ones during this tragic time in American history. Christmas tours will take place from Thanksgiving Evening, November 24th, through December 17th. Private tours for groups of ten or more are welcome at anytime throughout the holiday season. Reservations are required for Chritmas tours only. « less

“Don't miss this, what an experience.”

We are so glad that we went on the tour. Our tour guide was great. We found a new appreciation for what the civilians experienced during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. Everyone that visits Gettysburg should make time to go to The Shriver House. This is a family oriented Museum, and the whole family will walk away with
a new respect for history.

My family and I went to the Shriver House museum and were lucky enough to get our own private tour. The Shriver's story is very interesting and gives a great perspective on how the towns people of Gettysburg were impacted by the three day battle. You should really take the time to stop here and listen to their story.

I took the the tour of the Shriver house and will say the guide was great very in character.
I would recommend this to be every ones first stop in town ... most people forget the battle was happening in town and if you want to know what families like the Shrivers did this is the place to learn it i have visited the Shriver home during re-enactment as well and its an amazing experience to see the confederates take the house ... as for the workers and owners they are amazing people and treat every one very nice i must say they made my experience in Gettysburg a great one

“Fascinating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2009

I've visited the Shriver House Museum twice within the last 5 years, and still think it is my favorite attraction in Gettysburg. The museum was originally the home of the George Shriver family at the time the Civil War broke out. This extremely informative tour tells you the impact the battle had on the citizens of Gettysburg. The Shrivers were just one of many families who's lives were forever changed by the battle that took place in and around their town. My four year old grand daughter was with us, and the guide even captivated her attention throughout the tour. This historic home is furnished the way it would have looked at the time of the battle. I highly recommend a stop at the Shriver House Museum.
