“Service uneven; food quite good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2008

My 87-year-old mother and 27-year-old daughter and I ate at the Herr Tavern last evening after spending the day touring the Gettysburg battlefield. We found the food to be excellent -- though on the pricey side --and the service in need of some improvement. We waited 15-20 minutes for our bottle of wine to be brought to the table (it was being "custom-chilled," according to the waiter). The busboy asked us (three women), "How are you guys doing tonight?"

For a restaurant with $30 entrees, one expects more.

But the food was terrific and the setting delightful. The seasonal fall menu was full of tempting choices. We had the crabmeat-avocado salad with chili-lime dressing, the pork tenderloin in five-spice powder, and grilled scallops on a bed of creamy risotto in pumpkin cream. The dessert portions of creme brulee were immense!

The Herr Tavern offers an extensive wine list, too, with a special collection of 30 bottles priced under $30.

Served by a more professional staff, diners at the Herr Tavern could only get happier!

“Food was bad”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2008

The atmosphere is very nice and they had an extensive wine list, but the service was TERRIBLE and the food wasn’t much better. The runner and the hostess were much friendlier than our waitress who barely spoke to us other than a half-hearted lobby for the tip “goodnight”. There were long gaps between the salad (which was good) and the dinner (which was not). The Chef had been written up in a local review and so we thought we'd try it. Scallops with apples were drowned in Chinese noodles and the curry sauce was non-existent. It was like hunting for an Easter egg in artificial grass. The Buffalo loin, which I have had in other establishments, was tough even though it was cooked to medium and the potatoes and beets were okay, but again the meal came with no sauce etc. It was literally dry meat with dry sides. It was overpriced for the food, and we don't mind eating $30 meals on occasion. When we asked for more bread we were told that they only measure enough bread for reservation holders and a few "walk ins" (we were walk ins) and that there wasn't any more. We did eat the bread that was initially offered but it had clearly been sitting out (the garlic oil was good), if they're going to pre-prep bread baskets, plastic wrap might keep it from drying out. The only reason we requested more was because the salad came and went and there wasn't anything. The nice hostess did fill our water glasses twice in that time.
Don’t waste your money here, there are other area establishments that serve a better meal at a similar price or less.

“Very good, best we tried”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2008

Gettysburg ain't NY, or Philly, or Chicago so you can't reasonably expect super high end restaurants. That said, this was by far the best we found and was a really nice place with an attentive friendly staff, above average food, table cloths, and a good wine list.

With a bottle of wine its gonna run you ~130'ish dollars for two people but worth it to get off the beaten path (i.e. down town) and enjoy some local produce and some creative dishes.

As mentioned in a previous post, people dress well, and frankly, its nice to see.....

“Spent 2 nights”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Herr Tavern a couple of times and dined in thier restaurant while we were there. It was years ago but the food was delicious and the service was great. We plan on going back again in the fall and will definately visit again. Thier breakfast at the time was great, it was served on the porch and they had the best Stickey Buns I have ever had.
