My 87-year-old mother and 27-year-old daughter and I ate at the Herr Tavern last evening after spending the day touring the Gettysburg battlefield. We found the food to be excellent -- though on the pricey side --and the service in need of some improvement. We waited 15-20 minutes for our bottle of wine to be brought to the table (it was being "custom-chilled," according to the waiter). The busboy asked us (three women), "How are you guys doing tonight?"
For a restaurant with $30 entrees, one expects more.
But the food was terrific and the setting delightful. The seasonal fall menu was full of tempting choices. We had the crabmeat-avocado salad with chili-lime dressing, the pork tenderloin in five-spice powder, and grilled scallops on a bed of creamy risotto in pumpkin cream. The dessert portions of creme brulee were immense!
The Herr Tavern offers an extensive wine list, too, with a special collection of 30 bottles priced under $30.
Served by a more professional staff, diners at the Herr Tavern could only get happier!
