“Worst Service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2011

Extremely disappointed! Service was nonexistent. There were five of us there for lunch. After they took our orders, NO ONE returned for 45 minutes!!! My elderly parents were with us so we decided we could wait no longer. Since there was no apparent staff, I went to the kitchen door to let the waitress know that we could not wait any longer. She made NO apology for the delay and said the meal would be right up. The waitress brought a tray stand out (her idea of progress?) and we continued to wait. About 10 minutes later she appeared with our order (almost an hour for 5 sandwiches). The sandwiches were okay. We asked for a water refill (it had been an hour since we saw her last!), and the seating hostess brought us a decanter and walked way. The lack of service was unforgivable. If you feel compelled to patronize this restaurant, take a good book and a sleeping bag!

“Delicious Dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2011

Enjoyed a delicious dinner at this lovely old home. The service was excellent! The food was also wonderful. We had the table for two on the glass porch which would have been great if it had not been right beside the road. Next time I would chose a table in one of the two indoor dining rooms. Overall a lovely experience!

“Poor start, nice finish”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2011

Having arrived early for our dinner with several other couples, we proceeded to the bar for a cocktail... Or two. Now this is a nice well appointed house, but the bar looked like Longstreet had just marched his army through it on his way to the dinning room. After ordering a drink and there seeming to be no plan for the bartender to tidy up, I ordered a bar rag and proceeded to scrap out a space for our eagerly anticipated refreshments which were sometime in coming. The lenth of the prep time became more of a mystery when we received Bloody Marys sans ice and garnish. Where asked this poor man replied he would have to go to the kitchen for celery. We asked instead for olives which he eagerly poured into his hand and deposited directly into the waiting drinks. Worse... When the rest of our party arrived and one of the gentleman asked for a Manhatten, he received some that more resembled a Bronx or a Bowery than a Manhatten. This was obviously not the proper carrier choice for this young man and shame on management for not recognizing that fact.

So, it was off to dinner and things picked up. An imaginative menu featuring fresh local goods came to our rescue. And although I would conceder my filet only average, the rest of the meal was delicious. An important note here. They are said to serve an excellent prime rib, but alas they were all spoken for by the time we took our seats. When you call for reservations, reserve the prime rib as well.

Last, but certainly not least, our server was fantastic. Entertaining and attentive, she is the one that pushed our experience at Herr Ridge into very enjoyable evening.

“Noted, historic, yes, but that does not equal great dining”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

This inn is noted in the area for its out of the way location, the glass porch, history and wonderful dining. However, it falls short of a nice dining experience--even to the point of resting on its laurels.

The location is still on a major truck route, US 30; the famed glass porch is too noisy and stuffy to really be a nice place for experiencing a meal and conversation. We moved to the bar/dining room which is better and quieter, but right by the inn's lodging check-in desk.

The inn seems to be confused at what it is doing --is it lodging, is it a restaurant, or wait, maybe a good ol' location that everyone knows for organization lunches and weddings.
We were just a "walk-in" lunch and yet were asked our names and phone number-why?

The staff needs coordination--the staffers kept asking basic questions of each other--such as who has that table, is that item really available and what about the group luncheon, how are we going to handle them, now that they are arriving?
Our views into the kitchen revealed similar wasted energy and seemingly On-the-Job Training style workflow.
We overheard a staffer bemoaning us walk-ins as being a bother.

The lunch (just one turkey sandwich and a tuna melt) arrived in an hour, after our queries, and was a straight Average for food quality, presentation and tastiness. We tracked down our bill, paid and loved walking back into open air and sunshine.

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011

An out of the way Inn that is worth the effort to find! The food was excellent, the wait staff friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. After dining in another local restaurant the next night we wished that we had returned to the Inn at Herr Ridge instead. Who needs to say more?
