My husband and I have been frequenting the Gettysburg area from the start of our marriage 13 years ago. We loved going to the Dobbin House for its friendly staff and original atmosphere. We always try to visit the area on the off peak times, but the past two visits, at least 5 months apart, were appalling. The staff that was the always there, and remembered us even though they didn't see us for months at a time were all gone. We made a middle of the week trip in May of 2013 and sat at the bar because they were expecting a group reservation - that never showed while we were there. A couple beside was moving into the area where we live and we struck up a conversation that revolved around taxes, schools, and health care. We were giving good and bad points on each. The bar tender seemed to hover around and took it to mean we were referring to Gettysburg. The end result, our food was delivered last of all the patrons that came in after us. When I approached the manager with the bar tender in tow her excuse was she thought we were "trashing" her hometown. When it was explained what was being discussed and why the manager on duty said it was an honest mistake and gave us coupons for the next visit.
Not wanting to believe bad things happen twice, we went again, this time in the middle of September after all the Labor Day vacationers. We wound up in a heated discussion with the young man who was seating us because he forgot we were there and didn't put us down for a waitress to tend to us. This same waitress was enamored with another table and ignored us and another couple at the table next to us. I wound up going to the bar and getting everybody refills on sodas and tea. The bartender said the waitress was to do this and when I said loud enough for her to hear, maybe it she'd do her job I wouldn't have to. The end result, another visit from the manager on duty and apology saying it was the waitress duties to mingle with the guests.
The Dobbin House was the gem of Gettysburg once upon a time. Now, it's fools gold.
