Our park service does a wonderful job in providing a clean and well run facility for visitors. Food in the 'cafe' is limited and pricey; it is a good place to grab a quick drink and/or snack (my husband said the individual pizza was good) Most people picnic as there are outdoor tables. Since the food was expensive, BYO is probably the best option for a family. You cannot bring backpack or cooler into visitor center; however, picnic tables are accessible from parking lots and then it is a short walk to visitor center if you need to use restrooms. Very clean restrooms and a museum shop for browsing in addition to the 'for-fee' items. Visitor Center houses a film about the Gettysburg 3-day battle and cemetary (20min), the Cyclorama (very emotional as you are drawn right into the middle of the battle) and an extensive museum ... I would definitely recommend the trio ticket for adults and older children (at least 12-13). Young children may be over-whemed by the experience. We arrived mid-morning on a beautiful fall day. We spent about 3 hours at the visitor center and then we purchased the self-paced car tour of the battlefield that's available on CD in the museum bookstore. We drove around the park for another 3 hours as we stopped and walked around the recommended locations to gain the full experience of what occurred over three days in July 1863. I don't know if the experience would be the same during the summer when there are crowds of people and lot more cars at each stop.
