“Loved this place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

This place is away from town but not far which too me makes it great. Lots of wildlife and very quite. Cabin was nice & clean with no issues. We did not have anyone in the ajoining cabin so I can not comment on noise. We had a deck off the back but no chairs were out there which would have been nice. I did ask if we still had the option to purchase breakfast since we didnt when booking and was told yes. I'm glad I didnt because while $5.95 is not much the amount you get is comparable to most hotels free breakfast. Waffle maker, cereal, yogurt, apples ect. We took the 10 min drive into town instead. I did see people at the pond fishing and a place for bonfire but we did not have a chance to try those out. I agree with a few others that it would be hard for handicap to get in & out of a few of these cabins and seems like parking right at your cabin could be an issue if all cabins were full. Staff was nice but we seen very few of them. Over all good place for Gettysburg visit as long as you dont want to be in middle of the town. This will def be where we stay if we go back we just wont both with the breakfast they offer.

Cottage type venue.very clean and all comforts supplied. Low on guest attention.hard to reach a person on front desk. It was very rainy and room entrance had no roof cover.hard to get luggage nd key in. Walkways to rooms very uneven and in some cases had to walk through wet grass.parking bad.not handicap friendly.not close to food availability. Probably a nice view if u have a balcony.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you did not like the room arrangement. Next time you visit, you can ask for a different lodge and perhaps you would like how the furniture is arranged in one of them-we are happy to give you a look if they are vacant! Hope to see you again soon!

Minimalist is one way to describe it. The rooms, although clean, were lacking any relaxing seating accommodations. There was one wooden chair. The location is quite distant from any restaurants, activities, or the Visitor Center. The continental breakfast, they charged for, was also minimal and unappealing. This meant driving into town and trying to find a place to eat. Regarding handicap accessibility, there were only two "cabins" available with ramps. This still meant using the gravel driveways. Nothing was paved except in front of the check-in location. The description written by The Lodge and the reality of what actually exists are "a stretch" at best. I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending this place.

Room Tip: The cabins are shared with no soundproofing between the walls. We could hear everything.

The location was nice. Beautiful view & quiet. The room was cute looking although the longer we stayed the more we found negative points. They would not let us check in before 3:00. the 1st thing that happened was the TV would not work and we had to call for maintenance to fix it. The living room had a bed instead of a couch. It should have had a sofa bed. The light switch in the bathroom had a short and it kept turning off. We thought the cleaning lady would notice and have it fixed. The next day we stopped in to let them know but there was nobody available. We kept getting big ants running around the room. We found out that the front door had a big gap underneath that allowed anything to come in. The shower had way too much force that you could not adjust (it would hurt to shower). The floors were filthy! We were not told anything about a breakfast or restaurant on site. A restaurant on site would have been real nice. The last day that we were there we found a cockroach in the bathroom.

Thank you for taking the time to review our property on Trip Advisor. As the General Manager, I am responsible for all aspects of our property and look to learn and grow from all events (both positive and negative) that may occur. We do accommodate early arrivals for our guests, as our check-in time is 4pm (you arrived and checked in at 3pm). Upon your arrival you reported that your television did not work. Maintenance immediately responded and it was found that your television did work properly, however, your lodge has two televisions and the remotes were switched. As a result of this occurrence, steps have been taken to identify the remotes so that this will not happen again. With regards to the lack of a couch in your room, in researching your reservation, your original booking was for a Lieutenant's Lodge, which did have a couch. In March you upgraded to a private General's Lodge (does not have a couch) and a confirmation of your change was emailed to you. Housekeeping attempted to service your room and was told that no service was necessary. We did not have the opportunity to learn the faulty switch existed. When you departed and reported it to us, maintenance immediately changed the switch (living room). Additionally, you reported that you found a cockroach in your bathroom. Upon inspection by myself and the exterminator, no evidence of them was found (we will occasionally have a random water bug, however, I did not see any of them). As we are located on 63 acres, we are subject to all types of nature visitors and take every precaution to ensure that our lodges are pest free. Both our maintenance and housekeeping departments take a tremendous amount of pride in their work and responsiveness to our guests needs. We do offer a continental breakfast to our guests at a cost of $5.95 per person, which is relayed during the online reservation process, where you indicated that you did not wish to add this option. We also mention to our guests upon arrival that this option is still available to them at any point during their stay. What you experienced certainly was not the up to the superior standards that we have set and maintain for our property. I would certainly welcome the opportunity to discuss further with you, as I look to make sure that every guest experience is a very positive one.

We stayed in the Virginia cabin, which is a private "general's lodge," so we had no noise from neighbors. The cabin was nicely furnished with 19th century furniture including a 4-poster bed. We found both beds to be very comfortable; they were firm, and that's how we like them. The lodge was very clean and well-equipped, including dish detergent, dish cloth, and dish towel in the kitchenette along with a set of dishes, eating utensils, and mixing bowls. The bathroom was roomy and very attractive with a nicely tiled slate shower with huge shower head. The olivebranchbotanicals soap, shampoo, and such were a nice touch. A few less-than-ideal features: The freezer compartment in our mini-frig was not cold enough to freeze ice cubes. The light in the shower did not work. The small bedroom did not have air-conditioning, which meant that the door had to be open at all times in order for cool air to waft in from the much larger main room. (The situation would be the same in the winter -- no heater in the bedroom.) The continental breakfast was very simple but also quite cheap at $6.00.

Thank you for sharing your experience on Trip Advisor. I noticed that you are actually from Virginia, so I found it quite fitting that you stayed in our Virginia General's Lodge. I am glad that you had a wonderful trip to our town. I also wanted to let you know that in the summertime, we do place a second air conditioning unit in the back bedrooms. It had been rather chilly and we have not installed them yet. There are also baseboard heaters throughout the bedrooms that are turned on in the winter. Thank you again for taking the time and we look forward to your return trip to Gettysburg!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

We stayed in the NJ cabin for 3 nights, beginning Wednesday, May 22, 2013, and going into the Memorial Day weekend (Gettysburg is the PERFECT place to be on such a holiday, I might add. Our daughter now has a good idea of what Memorial Day is really all about). While not perfect, this was a very nice place to stay. We booked a Lt cabin, which has another, smaller room attached. My husband, myself, and 11 year old daughter found the area surrounding the lodges to be beautiful. The view was just gorgeous. The cabin was pretty and clean with a slate shower, big fluffy bath sheets, and plenty of room to spread out. There was a kitchenette, a back balcony with two adirondack chairs, and a sofa, chair, coffee table and small desk in the main living area. Flat screen TVs were located in both the main room and the bedroom. It was identical to what we saw online. Our daughter used the sofa bed, while my husband and I enjoyed the room with the 2 queen beds. We had the place to ourselves for the first night, then had neighbors the 2nd and 3rd nights. One reviewer stated that the walls were paper thin. We were able to hear our neighbors talking, but it wasn't really a distraction. It was generally a quiet, peaceful place to stay, away from the downtown area. I noted on our trip that there are MANY ghost tours occurring in town after dark, and more foot traffic than I had expected. The Lodges is only minutes from downtown, but far enough away to not have to deal with any of that.

Areas that could be improved: The continental breakfast wasn't anything special, though my 11 year old daughter did appreciate the make-your-own waffle iron. The beds are very high, and mediocre on the comfy scale. And there was one day where housekeeping arrived at 9am (8am our time) and we asked if they could come back later. They did not return to clean our cabin. My husband walked in on a manager reprimanding a staff member while on his way to breakfast, and the door was quickly shut - simply not something appropriate for a guest to see. Seating at the counter for more than 2 would be nice. Hard to get a card game or a board game going with nowhere to sit. We've stayed at a beach condo area in Wisconsin that had a campfire area and rowboat rental - both suggestions that would add to The Lodges atmosphere. If catering to families, a playground would also be a nice touch, though there is more than enough room for kids to play.

I saw one reviewer that stated their cabin worked well for handicapped. I would not assume that all the cabins would be, as the NJ would not work well. There is a steep incline at the front entrance that would not work well with a wheelchair, scooter, or a Hoyer lift. There would also be a hike back up from the main lodge with a trip to breakfast that likely would be difficult for a wheelchair or walker. There were others that appeared to be more accessible, though, and a shorter distance to the main lodge. The shower in our room had about a 4-5" lip to keep the water in, but may be okay size wise for a wheelchair. If accessibility is an issue, I would be sure to discuss it with the staff prior to booking.

All in all, it was a nice stay. We met friends from Maryland there, and they were so pleased that they plan to return in the fall, as it would likely be a beautiful place to take in the fall foliage. I would stay here again. My understanding is, this is a new facility. They're off to a great start, and well worth a return visit.

Room Tip: Some cabins may be suitable for handicapped needs, but not all. Check with staff prior to booking.

Thank you for reviewing The Lodges on Trip Advisor. I appreciate the comments that you shared, as we are continually looking to improve our amenities and services offered to our guests. I am very happy that you and your family where able to join us on such a special holiday. I wanted to let you know that we do have specific lodges for those requiring assistance such as wheel chairs. These lodges provide ramps for easy access, lowered beds and countertops, as well as roll-in showers. They are located directly across from the main lodge (State names, Maine & North Carolina). Again, thank you and we look forward to your return in the near future!

First we stayed in a two bedroom lodge which was very nice. The lodges are close to downtown and so restaurants are easily accessible. The breakfast at the lodge is so so. The thing we didn't like was that the desk staff provided little to no information on the area and it seemed you had to pull all the information out of them. Another item was we could never get anyone at the front desk to answer the phone for a question which meant you either had to walk down, which was probably good for us, or drive down. It was very inconvenient. This hotel is not cheap and is at the upper scale, but the service was not. One last thing, all the people in our party thought the beds were overly hard.

I appreciate the information that you provided, as we use all comments (both positive and negative) to learn and mature as a property.
