“Quaint and Comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

My mom and I take an annual trip to a new city each fall. This was one of the nicest hotels we have stayed at in all our travels. The rooms are spacious suites with lovely amenities. The James Gettys focuses on the details--each day, a basket of fresh, local baked goods are brought to your room, along with orange juice or local cider. The coffee is freshly ground, and at night, a sweet treat (cookies, chocolate) awaits you after a long day sightseeing. The location is perfect to walk anywhere in town and is away from the noisy stretch on Baltimore Street. Wonderful service, and very reasonably priced. We would highly recommend the James Gettys to anyone planning a trip to Gettysburg.

We stayed in the Truxall Suite in September and loved the room. It was clean and gorgeous. Our only complaint was with the noise from the street. The restaurant next door is noisy, and this made sleeping difficult. (They closed fairly early, so this is not an issue throughout the night.) Although the room was gorgeous, we would hesitate to stay there again simply because of the noise. The noise is also the reason we gave this hotel 4 stars instead of 5.

Thank you for your review! You stayed in my all-time favorite suite, but it is situated right in the front of the hotel, right over the sidewalk facing Chambersburg Street. Street noise is the one trade-off for being in such a prime, downtown location, but we do try to do everything we can to limit the effects. I hope you will stay with us again in the future and let us suggest one of our other suites, either higher up in the hotel or towards the back of the building!

Sincerely,
Catriona

We stayed on the Chambersburg side of hotel and the semi trucks rolling through all night kept us awake. Staff was wonderful and friendly, when we returned to our room there were homemade breads and chocolate waiting for us and orange juice in the fridge. The location is perfect, you can walk to anywhere in the town.

Room Tip: Ask for room in back of hotel!

We arrived at Gettysburg around 2:00 pm, there was parking outside the James Gettys reserved for hotel guests to load and unload, however we didn’t see it in time and decided to park behind the hotel. The alleyway to the parking is a little tricky but turn by the Bank ATM and the parking lot is just up the road. The alleyway is narrow and needs caution as people/vehicles show up unexpectedly. We found a parking spot and walked to the hotel on the brick pathway between the Blue Parrot and James Gettys, the Iron gate may be closed but it isn’t locked. Our room, the Lord Nelson Suite, was ready for our check-in. Our host was gracious and gave us a personal tour to our room which is opened with an actual key.

The room had a spacious living room with a decent size bedroom with a walk-in closet with plenty of shelving. There was a dresser and one night stand. The kitchenette had a full size refrigerator/freezer, a cooktop, and an old microwave. The coffee maker was a 4 cup. There is no dishwasher but a small drying rack and dish soap is provided. The bathroom was small, not a lot of room for storage of toiletries, there is a small narrow shelf near the sink. The shower worked well, water pressure was good, although the water was a little soft. The TV was DISH network with a limited amount of channels (no ESPN but did have the NFL and NHL network). We enjoyed the room overall, the only complaint was that I did wish there was a nightstand on both sides of the bed (there was enough room).

We left for some lunch/dinner to an Irish pub (GarryOwens) within walking distance. We didn’t have a lot of time to explore the downtown while we were there but there were many shops, restaurants, coffee/bakeries within walking distance. The second night we walked to the Blue & Gray bar and grill for Sunday football, wings, and beer after a long day exploring Gettysburg battlefields and the Eisenhower farm.

We came back to our room and our bed was turned down, and there was a plate of dark chocolate images of the James Gettys and a plate with two slices of carrot-streusel cake for the morning along with a carafe of OJ, creamer, and butter. The second night we received two large chocolate chip cookies and a plate of 2 slices of orange bread and 2 blackberry streusel muffins.
As far as noise goes, this room was relatively quiet, although I did wake up at 1:30 am with some shouting from the parking lot? It was a Saturday night and it soon quieted down. We heard nothing on Sunday.

We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Back of hotel rooms are quiet

It sounds like you managed to explore a great deal of Gettysburg in a very short time! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us! Thank you for your suggestion about the nightstand. The Lord Nelson’s is a very nice and quite peaceful room as you mentioned. It is spared the traffic noise, but is not immune to foot traffic in the alley or train whistles! As you know, it’s impossible to see all that Gettysburg has to offer in a single visit; we hope to see you again soon!

Sincerely,
Catriona

When we arrived a few hours early before check in, they said room was ready and checked us in. The woman even asked us if we needed help with our luggage, we didn't. She gave us a tour of place and room. We were pleasantly surprised, it had a 2 burner stove, microwave, large refrigerator. There was a sitting room with HDTV and dish network. The bedroom was nice size which was great we had 2 large suitcases and 2 duffers, so there was plenty room to store them without tripping over them. There was a tall dresser, a end table with 2 drawers, and a armoire to hang jackets and shirts. Plus iron board and iron. The bathroom consisted of a stand up shower, pedestal sink and toilet. The view was Main Street of Gettysburg. Each night they brought up a basket of fresher cooked bread/muffins, fruit and juice, along with 2 nice size pieces of chocolate, along with fresh ground coffee, for your morning. Only 2 minor things that I can say 1- parking is in rear of building with no back door into hotel, you have 2 walk between hotel and Bistro's sitting area, but they do have a temporary parking spot in front to unload and load your luggage. You will need to place parking paper on dashboard when parking in rear lot, this was a minor issue and should not have any impact on your stay here. The other minor issue was WiFi access was really bad, but we were on 3rd floor so they may have attributed to it, but your on vacation right? Do you really need WiFi internet? Oh yeah place has elevator so do not worry climbing stairs unless you want to. Highly recommend this place to stay, If our travels have us going back through Gettysburg we would definitely stay here again, and encourage anyone to stay here.

I’m so glad you enjoyed your stay in the City Hotel Suite! I would like to announce that we have made improvements to our Wi-Fi system and most, if not all, of the kinks have been worked out. Our IT tech spoke with admiration of our building and said that historic buildings like ours were “built like tanks”, which was a big challenge in bumping our signal to the higher floors. We hope to see you again soon!
Sincerely,
Catriona

My family & I booked two rooms for a single night (mid week) & wish we had been able to stay for longer.

The James Gettys hotel is a wonderful place to stay, right in the centre of town. Very friendly & helpful staff/owners who are more than happy to help with any queries.

The rooms were delightful & larger than what we expected. Given the rich history of the hotel, James Gettys really has the perfect atmosphere for a short stay in Gettysburg.

We hope to stay here again at some point in the next 12 months.

James Gettys hotel renovated in the early 20th century has the decor, ambience of the mid nineteenth century with modern conveniences of the 21st century. The staff provide a friendly welcome that enhances the warmth and comfort of that era. Stepping through the entrance provides a 'back to the future' feeling from the late 1860's.
A continental breakfast of muffins (most delicious) made by local bakers helps start the day. We Expected to find General Mead in the next room.

Thank you very much for your kind review! We love the history of our building, but also realize how important those modern comforts are when you’re travelling! Our “local bakers” are actually right here on our own staff and all of our delicious treats are baked in-house! Please stay with us again soon!
