“Wanted to see Lincolns Funeral Carriage”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2015 NEW

Museum still in the process of adding exhibits. Could use an update, but for the price (4.95) it was worth it for me - I wanted to see Lincolns Funeral Carriage! (on display until Aug). This is not the one that paraded on the streets of Washington (that burned in a fir) this one brought Lincoln from the house where he died to the funeral home and from the funeral home to the White House.

“Best Civil War battles summary movie”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2015

This used to be a wax museum, but has changed its focus to the life of the Gettysburg people and the impact of the war on the area. We noticed a general refocusing of the history around Gettysburg to embrace the events leading up to the battle, and the devastating aftermath on the soldiers, commanders and the townspeople. Definitely worth the time and the investment. The Visitors Center (where most people start their Gettysburg experience) also follows this.

“Well, it's a different kind of stop.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2015

The actual museum displays are well done, even the 3D effects on some of the photos. But the museum is very small and takes very little time to cover. We hung around until time for the film and really it is something you could skip. We walked into a darkened room which is 3 sided room with various manikins placed in a pit area as if in a frozen battle scene, we assumed that they would play a part of the film. Not really. As the short film played in the background, a few times little flashes would go off between the manikins and that was it. Our group walk out afterwards wondering just what they were trying to achieve. It was really very strange.

We’re sorry to hear you did not enjoy your visit to the Heritage Center. Over the last 15 months, we’ve totally reinvented our programming with major renovations and investment. Our primary emphasis is on the town of Gettysburg - what it was like before during and after the battle.

During the development stage, we acknowledged that different teaching methods resonate better with different people, and therefore have chosen to use various styles to tell our story. While some may prefer to read quotes and storyboard panels, others prefer imagery such as audio/visual presentations - including video and 3-D programming, as well as interactive experiences. Our goal is to connect with all learning styles.

The finale of the tour is the Award-winning, 20-minute movie, Gettysburg: Animated Map, which was produced by the esteemed Civil War Trust. The figures in the “pit area” are used conjunction to symbolize Pickett’s Charge during the program. This was part of the former “Wax Museum”, and after much consideration, and listening to our visitors, we have chosen to keep it in place – for the time being. For some, it is still the connection to the wax museum, while others who did not visit with us as the wax museum, like the life-sized figures as a visual aide. Especially for our youth, it makes the battle more realistic and a more-than-a movie experience.

Since we are rounding up the first phase of our enhancements, we would really like to talk with you further to understand your group’s needs, wishes and expectations. Your feedback may assist us as we make adjustments to the current programming and help guide us as we enter our next stage of development. Please reach out directly to either Tammy, Stephanie, or Ryan at 717-334-6245 or info@gettysburgmuseum.com

“The old wax museum is gone ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2015

... and the Heritage museum is a wonderful replacement

the 3 - D photos and the animated map truly put the average person in a good spot to understand just how the battle unfolded and developed over those 3 awful days. Even for a old veteran of the fields such as myself if you have yet to visit - do yourself the courtesy and stop in.

P.S. Outstanding Book Selection in the gift shop
