“Fun and fresh!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

The menu offered a great variety of dishes for all palettes and preferences. From vegetarian to meat lovers, to fried foodies to health nuts, Supper caters to all tastes. The dishes were layered in flavors ... the must get? Hushpuppies (and this is coming from a health nut!)

“Great Concept, Average Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Was very excited to try Supper but found the food and experience to be meh at best. The small South Street location is cute and the comfort food concept is very cool. Unfortunately, the execution on the food lacked detail and left the food tasting bland. The duck and waffles signature dish was very dry and bland, lacking creativity and flavor. The duck was admittedly cooked well but it's relationship with the waffle was odd and left the entire dish flat and without flavor. The fried chicken was unique but sometimes unique is not great -- seemed like more of a corn meal coating and did not carry the flavor or texture that defines great fried chicken. The scallops were probably the best of the entrees but nothing about this dish screamed out as unique or memorable.

In the end analysis, Supper is average and average is not great given the number of very good restaurants in this lovely city. It needs to step its game up creativity-wise if it wants to compete.

“Sit down to SUPPER and enjoy the balanced flavors.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Supper is creative, Supper offers a wonderful balance of flavors and textures.

Dinner started for us with the chilled corn and coconut soup and BE Farm greens and herbs salad. While the soup sounds a bit odd, and perhaps evokes images of Thai food, it is fresh and wonderful. Nothing far east about it, other than a farm in Eastern PA. A lovely balance of the coconut and corn, neither one overwhelming the other in a frothed and chilled preparation. The salad on the other hand was over-dressed plate of greens with crackings and cornbread on the bottom, resulting in their being soggy. No contrast of taste or texture.

For our main course we had the day-boat scallops and duck and waffles. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the yogurt accompaniment added just the perfect tang to balance the sweetness of the scallops. The dish was a wonderful use of individual flavors without there being conflict. The Duck is a confit leg served with waffles in a wonderful play on an old Southern dish. The richness of the duck worked quite nicely with the sweetness of the syrup and the pecan of the waffles.

But there was a massive failure, in my opinion. The duck fat fried potatoes. The potatoes are given their first cooking in the duck fat (sort of a confit) and the final cooking in canola oil. The problem was that they failed to be crisp on the exterior, even when served hot from oil. The overall texture was a bit mushy. I don't think they would pass as a "french fry".

Things got better with dessert when shared the blueberry brown betty. Again the balance of flavors, even with the intensity of the fresh blueberries.

As usual we shared a bottle of wine. As for the wine list, most unknown to me, probably because they seem to be from small artisanal wineries. Prices are moderate to high. But looking around, I'd say this is a wine by the glass crowd.

Service was quite good.

As with nearly all "in restaurants", the decor is made up of hard surfaces and between the music and chatter, it is not a restful place to dine. Not for quiet romantic conversation.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

Supper is a delight. It is comfort food twisted into a unique meal. We were there on fried chicken night and this is fried chicken reinvented. No one could keep their fork off others' plates as each entree ordered was delicious.
